Darren Fletcher, the new interim manager of Manchester United, revealed that he sought the blessing of legendary Sir Alex Ferguson before taking charge of the team. The decision comes in the wake of Ruben Amorim’s dismissal and marks a moment of renewal for the club, which is facing a tumultuous period. Fletcher, who will be responsible for the team’s trip to Burnley for the Premier League and the FA Cup clash against Brighton, did not hide the importance of that conversation with his former mentor.

“I don’t like to make important decisions without first speaking to Sir Alex,” said the former player and now manager, who is 41 years old. “I have a very good relationship with him, so I wanted to talk to him before everything and, to be honest, get his blessing. He deserves that respect.” Fletcher’s decision to consult Ferguson, who was present at Elland Road during Amorim’s last game, highlights the lasting influence of the Scottish manager on the culture of Manchester United.

Fletcher, who made over 300 appearances for the club, expressed that, as an employee of Manchester United, his priority is always the well-being of the club. “When you are a club employee, your job is to give your best for Manchester United. It’s something I try to live and believe every day,” he added, reflecting on his new role while facing the criticism and pressure that comes with the position.

The former coach Amorim, who left the team after a disappointing draw against Leeds, made pointed remarks about the influence that commentators, particularly former captain Gary Neville, have on the club’s decisions. Fletcher, who shared the dressing room with several of these critics, acknowledged the difficulty the current team faces in dealing with external pressure. “You can’t ask them to be softer on us, because they are passionate people, they have the right to their opinion and they are really good,” he said.

The new interim coach also revealed that, due to a lack of time, he has not been able to speak individually with all the players, limiting his discussions to captain Bruno Fernandes and some of the new signings, such as Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. “The external noise is hard to deal with because these players have won everything. They have success behind them and they have trophies. It’s hard to criticize them back, because they have their medals on the table,” he commented.

Fletcher also mentioned that he tried to get in touch with Amorim, who gave his son Jack the opportunity to debut with the team, but has not yet managed to speak with him. “I would like to have that conversation because I had a good relationship with Ruben and he was great with me. But it’s important to move on quickly. Football is a cruel game, so it’s essential that we try to create a bit of energy and spirit,” he concluded.

With an impressive history at Manchester United and now leading the team in a critical phase, Fletcher will have the monumental task of restoring the confidence and performance of the Red Devils. The club’s immediate future depends on his ability to unite the players and bring greatness back to Old Trafford.
