Shock and disappointment marked the speech of [Mauricio Pochettino](https://apitofinal.pt/internacional/belgica-vinga-se-de-decisao-polemica-de-infantino-e-trump-com-goleada-aos-eua/) after the elimination of the [United States](https://apitofinal.pt/nacional/belgica-ironiza-caso-balogun-e-goza-com-danca-a-donald-trump-apos-golo-video/) against [Belgium](https://apitofinal.pt/internacional/mikel-merino-decide-nos-descontos-e-elimina-o-sonho-mundial-de-portugal/) by 4-1 in the 2026 World Cup. The American coach did not hold back in acknowledging that his team was far from the level displayed throughout the tournament, in a match where Belgium excelled and secured their place in the next round.
The US team was unable to counter Belgium's dominance, being eliminated from the competition after a performance that fell short of expectations. Pochettino emphasized that “we did not show our true quality as a team,” admitting that his players never connected with the game. The Argentine coach made sure to credit the opponent: “I want to congratulate Belgium because they played well and are a great team, but we were not at our level, nor did we ever connect with the game. We started poorly and never managed to keep up with the pace of the game. Even when we made it 1-1, we conceded another goal in the next play that we should not have allowed. We were not the same team that showed quality throughout the tournament. We had a very bad day, and we have to accept that, because this happens sometimes and, when it's knockout, we don't have another chance. It hurts to be eliminated,” Pochettino stated, visibly frustrated with the outcome.
The controversy surrounding Balogun and his starting position against Belgium was also addressed by the coach, who expressed feelings of disappointment regarding the situation. Pochettino explained: “What is the point of being insulted and receiving negative messages and threats? There is a rule that the federation can apply for the player to be able to participate. My role is to coach, and if Balogun was available because he was authorized, there is no problem. I felt let down by many people who spoke about politics, manipulation, ethics, and integrity.” These statements make clear the tense atmosphere that has surrounded the national team, as well as the negative impact of the criticism directed at the coach.
Despite the bitter farewell to the World Cup, Pochettino preferred to highlight the team's positive journey and the potential of the young American players. “For me, it is a great pride, because in just one year, and considering all the circumstances, this team has shown that it can play football and compete. We need to continue to improve. We have many young players with potential and a bright future. I see a young generation coming up. It's just a matter of continuing to believe in this process,” he stated, expressing confidence in the future.
Regarding his continuation as head coach of the United States national team, Pochettino chose not to commit: “I am happy and have a great relationship with the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF), but it is not the time to talk about that. We need to evaluate, and we can certainly start talking in the coming weeks, if the USSF wishes to.” The future of the Argentine coach thus remains open, at a time when reflection on the next cycle of the American national team is necessary.
