Illan Meslier has become the latest addition to Arsenal, signing with the English champions on a free transfer after being released by Leeds United. The experienced 26-year-old French goalkeeper arrives in London following a long association with the Elland Road club, where he built a solid reputation but ultimately fell to third choice last season.

Meslier ended his time at Leeds at the conclusion of last season, not having played a single minute after helping the club return to the Premier League in the 2024-25 campaign. The Frenchman was a key player for five years as a starter, accumulating 215 appearances and 70 clean sheets over his seven seasons at Leeds United, but lost his position to Karl Darlow following three errors that directly led to opposing goals during the Championship.

In exclusive statements at the signing for Arsenal, Meslier did not hide his satisfaction: “I am extremely happy. It’s a great day for me because I have just signed for the champions. For me, Arsenal is the biggest club in England.” The French goalkeeper also added: “I am very happy and very proud to join Arsenal. I can’t wait to show the love I have for this badge, and I can’t wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club that needs to lift trophies time and time again.”

The plan for Meslier involves integrating him as the third goalkeeper of the squad, allowing the young Tommy Setford, 20, to be loaned out. In the immediate future, David Raya is expected to retain his starting position, with Kepa Arrizabalaga as the direct backup, although the future of the Spanish goalkeeper remains uncertain during this transfer window. According to gathered information, Kepa is open to taking on a starting role at another team should a suitable offer arise, but he is in no rush to leave, also prioritizing family stability.

Meslier's arrival at Arsenal comes after a season in which he fell down the hierarchy at Leeds, behind Darlow and Lucas Perri, and without any appearances for the first team. The move to the English champions represents a fresh start and the opportunity to compete in a highly demanding context.

The schedule for Arsenal's opening matches in the Premier League has already been set, with the London club facing Coventry on August 21, followed by away games against Aston Villa and Sunderland, and home matches against Chelsea and Brighton in the following weeks. Meslier's integration could be crucial for adding depth to the squad and ensuring quality solutions in goal throughout a long and challenging season.
