“Gianni Infantino isolated at FIFA after controversy with Balogun.”

Gianni Infantino is facing increasing isolation within FIFA following the controversy surrounding the suspension of American forward Folarin Balogun, which was raised after an intervention by former U.S. President Donald Trump. This situation jeopardizes the future of the current FIFA president, who may become a “lame duck,” meaning a leader without effective power within the organization.

The controversy erupted after FIFA's disciplinary committee decided to postpone Balogun's suspension until after the World Cup, despite upholding the player's red card. Several countries that had previously supported Infantino's re-election are now reconsidering their stance, claiming that the decision crossed a red line and suggesting manipulation of the match outcome. Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, and Switzerland issued statements criticizing the decision, with Belgium, the U.S. opponent in the Round of 16, standing out among the critics.

An anonymous FIFA source told the Times that “the political interference in football could not be stronger than what Trump did, and FIFA's attempts at explanation have been ridiculous. Infantino's power has run out; he is now very isolated — he will be a lame duck president.” This scenario severely damages Infantino's reputation, making it unlikely that he will achieve his main objectives in the next term, namely the expansion of the Club World Cup or transforming the tournament into a biennial event.

Despite the wear and tear, Infantino still has the support of some federations, particularly from Africa. The Niger federation recently declared that it “rejects any attempt at manipulation or destabilization and promises its unwavering support to the president.” On the other hand, countries like Egypt and Senegal are already considering revising their stance. Interestingly, the English federation (FA) has maintained its support for Infantino's re-election, even with a pending complaint in FIFA's ethics committee, filed by the Norwegian federation, for alleged violations of political neutrality rules.

The controversy has intensified due to FIFA's lack of transparency in the case. The organization refused to disclose the written grounds for the decision regarding Balogun and did not reveal which members of the disciplinary committee were involved, contrary to the common practice of a decision being made by a single member. Infantino confirmed that he received a call from Trump about the red card but emphasized that he informed the former U.S. president that the decision would be made by an “independent” disciplinary committee.
