Ederson has renewed his contract with Atalanta until 2031, after Manchester United backed out of a €45 million transfer. The 27-year-old Brazilian midfielder saw a deal that was nearly finalized with the Red Devils canceled, a decision that surprised both the Italian club and its fans.
The initial agreement involved Ederson's transfer to Old Trafford after the World Cup, in a total package worth €45 million, including variables. However, Manchester United withdrew from the signing, citing issues with the player's medical examinations. Rumors emerged that the English club's preference had shifted to Roma midfielder Manu Kone, but they officially pointed to the athlete's physical condition.

Cristiano Giuntoli, the sporting director of Atalanta, expressed his shock at this turnaround and assured that there is no physical issue concerning Ederson. “We were astonished by the decision of Manchester United. The player is in perfect condition, and we will renew his contract,” Giuntoli stated. The confirmation of the renewal came shortly after, with the Brazilian signing a new deal until June 2031, which includes a salary increase.
According to information from Sportitalia, Ederson will earn around 3.5 million euros per season, plus performance-related bonuses, but the contract does not include any release clause. The midfielder joined Atalanta in the summer of 2022 from Salernitana, and his previous contract was set to expire at the end of the current season.
The controversy surrounding Ederson's physical condition centers on his right knee, which underwent surgery for meniscus cleaning in August 2025. However, this procedure did not affect his performance, as the Brazilian accumulated 3,169 minutes in official matches this season, demonstrating solid physical condition.
This renewal represents a vote of confidence from Atalanta in their midfielder and eliminates any doubts related to his physical health. The Italian club thus ensures the continuity of a key piece in their midfield, despite interest from top clubs such as Manchester United. Ederson remains, therefore, a long-term investment for the Bergamo team, which strengthens its squad with a player in top form and valued in the market.
