The 2026 World Cup victory will guarantee the winner the largest monetary prize in football history. At MetLife Stadium on July 19, the champion team will not only receive the most coveted trophy but will also take home a record sum in prizes, a result of the increased number of teams and the consequent growth in broadcasting and sponsorship revenues.
The winner will be entitled to $50 million solely in performance bonuses, a figure that exceeds by $8 million the amount awarded to Argentina, the champions in 2022, representing the largest increase between World Cup editions. In addition to this amount, funds guaranteed for qualification and preparation will raise the total received by the winning team to over $60 million, not including any potential additional bonuses awarded by their respective federations.
In total, FIFA will distribute $871 million in prizes for the 2026 edition, nearly double the amount awarded in 2022, when the total was $440 million. Each of the 48 qualified teams is guaranteed at least $12.5 million, divided between a qualification fee of $10 million and $2.5 million for preparation. From there, the amounts increase based on each team's progress in the competition.
The prize money by stage reveals a sharp increase: teams eliminated in the group stage receive around 9 million in performance bonuses, in addition to the guaranteed amount. The new format with 48 teams introduces the round of 32, which did not exist previously, and is worth about 12 million for the eliminated teams. Advancing to the round of 16 guarantees 14 million, the quarter-finals are valued between 19 to 20 million, fourth place receives approximately 28 million, third place is around 30 million, while the runner-up collects 33 to 34 million, with the champion standing alone at the top with 50 million.
This structural change, which increases the number of teams from 32 to 48, is the main reason for the substantial increase in prize money. More teams mean more matches, more broadcasting opportunities, and more sponsorship spaces, which allows FIFA to raise the amounts distributed. This makes the 2026 World Cup the most profitable ever for all participating federations, not just for the champion. Even teams that exit in the group stage will receive more than some previous champions of the tournament.

The analysis comes from expert Sahar Fatemi, an Iranian-British football analyst and content producer based in London, who highlights the importance of these figures for federations: “This is the most lucrative World Cup in history for all participating teams, reflecting the expansion of the format and the growth of global revenues associated with the competition.” Fatemi, who is also developing a tactical analysis platform in Persian, believes that the increase in prize money could significantly influence the planning and investment of national teams for this edition.
