Enzo Maresca firmly confronts the suspicions surrounding Manchester City at a crucial moment for the club. The new manager has refused to let the case of the “115 charges” regarding alleged financial infractions distract him from football.
The Italian returned to the Etihad this summer to succeed Pep Guardiola, taking over a squad capable of competing for the title while also inheriting a shadow that has loomed over the club since February 2023. The ongoing process involves alleged violations of financial rules over several seasons, with Manchester City denying any wrongdoing. Despite the absence of a verdict, which leaves uncertainty about the team's future, Maresca has assured that this situation will not dictate his approach.
In his first press conference as City manager, the coach was questioned about the case and responded with remarkable confidence. Quoted by Fabrizio Romano, he stated: “The only thing I can say is that three years ago, during the treble season, I was here and it was the same words about this. In three years, everything remains the same.” He also added: “Nothing has happened. Personally, I have no concerns.” This stance reflects the line the club has maintained: life continues as normal until the independent commission releases its decision.
Maresca knows the club environment well, having been part of Guardiola's coaching staff during the historic 2022/23 season. However, the controversy does not fade. According to talkSPORT, the hearing of the case concluded in December 2024, but the verdict is still pending. Initially, there were said to be 115 violations, a number that is now reported as 130. Manchester City maintains its total denial of the accusations.
The coach is right not to allow a legal process, over which he has no control, to dominate the start of his tenure. His mission is to prepare the team, manage the squad, and await an official decision to react. However, uncertainty does not vanish with words, and the prolongation of this case has become news in itself. Each new signing, each coach, or title won will continue to be analyzed in light of this shadow.
Maresca may remain calm, but Manchester City can only truly begin a new era post-Guardiola when there is clarity regarding the judicial outcome. Until then, the club and its fans will have to live with this cloud of uncertainty hanging over the immediate future of the English champions.
