Fermin Lopez, the Barcelona midfielder, described last summer as “the worst ever” after being forced to miss the glory of the Spanish national team at the World Cup due to an injury. The 23-year-old, who had an impressive 2025-26 season, scoring 13 goals and providing 17 assists in 48 matches, saw his hopes of being a key player for the national team crumble when a metatarsal fracture sidelined him from the tournament.
In statements to Catalunya Radio, Lopez admitted that the experience was extremely difficult: “It has definitely been the worst summer. Everything was going well… I felt at the peak of my form and, suddenly, the injury appeared.” The player confessed that he initially struggled to watch the national team’s matches, revealing that “it was hard, as I wanted to be there playing, especially because I was in my best shape.”
Despite the pain of his absence, Lopez also expressed his joy at the national team's triumph: “But the victory also meant a lot to me, as it is my country and those are my teammates, especially the Barcelona players who were there.” He acknowledged that the experience, although painful, brought him valuable lessons, stating: “This setback hit me really hard. I have to admit that I learned a lot…”
The midfielder is determined to come back even stronger after the injury, stating that his goal is to return with renewed motivation: “The aim is to come back from this injury with strong motivation, and I believe I am fully ready. Last season, I showed my worth and what I can offer to the team. And this season, I must continue to develop and play at the same level as last season.”
The future of Fermin Lopez at Barcelona and with the Spanish national team is promising, and his determination to overcome this obstacle could be a crucial factor for the success of his career. The next challenge will be to ensure that he is fully recovered and competing at the highest level, where he can once again showcase his talent.
