Botafogo faces one of its greatest crises after being defeated 1-6 by Cienciano in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana round of 16. The match, held at high altitude in Cusco, Peru, leaves the Rio de Janeiro team in an extremely complicated position, with a five-goal deficit to overturn in the second leg, which will take place at the Nilton Santos Stadium.

After the final whistle, coach Franclim Carvalho expressed his discontent, describing the result as “a day that embarrasses us.” During the press conference, he explained that the changes in the starting lineup aimed to counterbalance the opponent’s style of play, characterized by constant crosses and balls into the area. “We changed the full-backs because of the type of game the opponent plays, which involves a lot of balls in the area,” he emphasized.

Franclim Carvalho did not hesitate to criticize his team’s performance, highlighting the sequence of goals conceded. “The opponent scored one goal, then the second which VAR took a long time to analyze. Then they scored the third, and the fourth is their merit. In the second half, we came back differently, we scored our goal and conceded the fifth goal when we were completely out of position,” he analyzed, also mentioning that the speed of the ball at altitude is “completely different.”

This result marks Botafogo’s heaviest defeat in 16 years, with the last time the team conceded six goals in a single match dating back to 2010, when they lost 0-6 to Vasco da Gama. When asked about the quality of Cienciano, the coach acknowledged the opponent’s potential, recalling that the Peruvians had eliminated Lanús in the previous round. “It’s a team that has an identity, that has a well-defined idea. They put a lot of people in the box, a lot of crosses into the area, a lot of long balls. And they do that well, especially at home,” he commented.

Despite the significant disadvantage, Franclim Carvalho remains somewhat hopeful, stating that the second match will be “completely different,” although he acknowledges the difficulty of the task ahead for his team. “Obviously, our situation at the moment is very difficult,” he admitted.

Botafogo is now preparing to travel from Peru to Salvador, where they will face Vitória next Sunday in a match counting towards the Brasileirão. Meanwhile, the decisive second leg against Cienciano is scheduled for next Thursday, where the team will need a historic turnaround to advance in the competition.
