Fara Williams, former England international, believes that Andoni Iraola can succeed at Liverpool this season, predicting that the high-profile signings from last year may finally prove their worth in 2026-27. The former Everton player considers that the “uncertainty” surrounding Mohamed Salah for much of last season will no longer be an issue, especially following his departure in the summer.
After Arne Slot led the Merseyside team to the Premier League title in 2024-25, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) invested over £400 million in players such as attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz, forward Alexander Isak, and left-back Milos Kerkez. Wirtz, who cost £116 million, took time to adapt to Anfield, while Isak, who moved from Newcastle United for £125 million, had a season plagued by injuries. Kerkez, who arrived for £40 million, struggled to establish himself, with Andrew Robertson often preferred.
Despite Iraola's concerns about his team's lack of energy after pre-season defeats to Leeds United and Monaco, Williams is confident that the Spanish coach can shine at Liverpool, along with the aforementioned signings. In comments to F365, Williams stated, “It's never easy for foreign players to come in and adapt. And those who do, need to have a great season. So, the adaptation period has probably taken longer for Wirtz.” The former player praised the quality of the player, highlighting his performances in the Bundesliga and for the German national team.
Williams also addressed the issue of Isak's injuries and Kerkez's difficulties, stating that “the pressures were different in Liverpool for those players.” However, he expressed great confidence in the coach, emphasizing that Iraola's philosophy can help integrate the players. “When you look at the philosophy of the coaches and what you do with a group of players, he can certainly do that, and he will at Liverpool.”
The former international, who represented England 172 times between 2001 and 2019, also mentioned how Salah's competition with Slot over playing time may have affected the team in the previous season. Liverpool also suffered from Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure to Real Madrid and the death of forward Diogo Jota. Although the team is not yet fully formed, Williams believes there is more stability at the club at this moment.
