Denmark defeats Wales 2-0 in Nations League with crucial set-piece errors

Denmark players in red kits celebrate a goal in front of fans, number 9 and teammates embracing near the corner flag at a Nations League match
In short
  • Denmark beat Wales 2-0 at Parken Stadium, extending their unbeaten run against the Dragons to four Nations League matches.
  • Denmark's goals came from a Damsgaard free-kick deflected off Hojlund and Davies, and a Isaksen volley off the crossbar.
  • Wales' set-piece defending was exposed, and the Dragons remain bottom of Group A4, winless in six matches.

Denmark secured a commanding 2-0 victory over Wales at Parken Stadium, extending their unbeaten run against the Dragons to four consecutive matches in the UEFA Nations League. The home side dominated the early exchanges, relentlessly pressuring Wales’ defense with sharp attacking play.

Denmark’s initial threats came through Gustav Isaksen, whose left-footed half-volley skimmed wide after 15 minutes, followed by Patrick Dorgu’s headed attempt from an Isaksen cross that narrowly missed the target. Moments later, Isaksen appeared to have opened the scoring with a volley from Rasmus Hojlund’s chipped pass, but VAR intervened to rule out the goal for offside. Wales barely escaped further trouble when Mikkel Damsgaard’s shot rattled the right post, denying the hosts an early lead.

Wales fought back as the first half progressed, gaining momentum with Sorba Thomas firing just wide and Connor Roberts’ close-range strike expertly saved by Denmark’s goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen. The visitors ended the half on the front foot, signaling their intent to challenge the hosts.

Early in the second half, Neco Williams tested Jorgensen from 25 yards, but it was Denmark who struck first. Damsgaard’s free-kick into the box took a deflection off Hojlund and then off Ben Davies to wrongfoot Wales’ keeper Danny Ward, putting Denmark ahead after 50 minutes. Wales responded quickly with Thomas delivering a dangerous cross that just eluded Kieffer Moore’s reach.

The momentum swung decisively in Denmark’s favor when substitute Mohamed Daramy missed a clear chance from close range, only for Isaksen to capitalize moments later. Wales’ failure to clear a subsequent free-kick allowed Isaksen to volley the ball off the underside of the crossbar and into the net, doubling Denmark’s lead with under 25 minutes remaining.

Though Hojlund had a late goal disallowed for offside, it did little to alter the outcome. Denmark’s victory marked their first in this Nations League campaign and maintained their unbeaten streak in nine consecutive home matches. The result leaves Denmark third in Group A4, while Wales remain at the bottom, winless in their last six matches after two fixtures.

Denmark’s clinical execution exposed Wales’ defensive frailties, particularly on set-piece situations, which proved costly in the final reckoning. The Dragons now face mounting pressure to reverse their fortunes in forthcoming fixtures after a frustrating display at Parken Stadium.
