Kai Havertz Faces Uncertainty as Arsenal Star Injured in Germany’s Nations League Clash

Arsenal’s attacking plans have taken a hit as Kai Havertz is set to return to London for assessment following a muscle injury sustained during Germany’s 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in their Nations League opener. The 27-year-old forward was forced off in the first half after a challenge from Quinten Timber, raising fresh concerns about his fitness ahead of Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League fixtures.

Havertz’s injury, suspected to be a minor muscle strain, emerged early in the international window, prompting his immediate departure from the Germany squad. He was substituted by Younes Ebnoutalib as Germany’s manager Jurgen Klopp revealed the situation: “Both are currently undergoing an MRI. I hope we get the diagnosis [on Thursday] evening. But of course, this isn't great. I hope it's nothing serious. The lads are probably out for us. But hopefully, they'll be back in action relatively quickly.” Klopp also confirmed Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala is sidelined with a suspected thigh problem, compounding Germany’s injury woes.

This setback adds to Havertz’s troubling injury history, which has limited his availability for Arsenal. Having started six of the club’s eight matches this season and netted three goals, Havertz’s fitness is crucial for Mikel Arteta’s frontline. Last season, muscle and knee issues restricted him to only seven Premier League starts. Notably, a hamstring tear sidelined him for the final three months of the 2024/25 campaign. Should this muscle strain keep him out, Arsenal’s striking options will be severely depleted.

Currently, Viktor Gyokeres stands as Arsenal’s sole out-and-out striker, though Mikel Merino has occasionally filled the role. Gyokeres, despite scoring 21 goals across all competitions last season, has had a slow start to 2026/27, managing just 29 Premier League minutes and a single shot across two starts against Napoli and Ipswich. The absence of Havertz puts immense pressure on Gyokeres to prove his worth, especially after Arsenal’s unsuccessful attempts to sign Julian Alvarez and Vinicius Junior during the summer transfer window.

Sky Sports analyst Nick Wright highlighted Arsenal’s cautious optimism: “They will take further consolation from the fact the issue has occurred early in the international window, leaving more than two weeks of recovery time before they face Leeds.” However, Wright emphasised the discomfort around the timing, given Arsenal’s limited striking depth.

Further tactical insight from Jay Bothroyd on Sky Sports News detailed the contrast between Gyokeres and Havertz: “Gyokeres wants to run in behind more, play on the shoulder, and get down the channels between the centre-back and full-back. Arsenal will need to adapt by looking for him early on the half-turn, as he has speed and strength. But he needs to improve his hold-up play because Havertz provides a platform for link-up with the front three.”

Arsenal’s Premier League campaign resumes at home against Leeds on October 10, with Havertz’s injury status to be closely monitored. Meanwhile, Germany has replaced Havertz and Musiala with Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Burkardt for their next fixture, underlining the severity of the absences.

As Arsenal brace for this blow, the pressure mounts on both Gyokeres and Merino to step up and fill the void left by Havertz’s injury.
