In short
  • Celtic and Rangers have opened loan talks with Arsenal over 16-year-old Max Dowman, per journalist Ekrem Konur.
  • Over a dozen clubs have reportedly contacted Arsenal, and Dowman becomes loan-eligible when he turns 17 on December 31.
  • Arsenal are open to a loan due to limited first-team chances, while questions remain over fast-tracking him into Mikel Arteta's squad.

Celtic and Rangers are actively negotiating with Arsenal over the potential loan acquisition of prodigious talent Max Dowman, amid interest from more than a dozen clubs, according to journalist Ekrem Konur. The 16-year-old Arsenal sensation, who is set to become eligible for loan moves upon turning 17 on December 31, has already showcased his striking capabilities at senior level, netting three goals and securing a Premier League winners’ medal last season despite limited first-team opportunities.

Konur revealed on X that both Glasgow giants have opened discussions with Arsenal regarding Dowman’s short-term move to gain vital match experience. “Celtic & Rangers held talks with Arsenal over loan move for Max Dowman. Interest → Over a dozen clubs contacted Arsenal. Situation → Eligible for loan once he turns 17 on Dec 31. Arsenal → Open to loan, limited first‑team chances short term,” he posted.

While Arsenal clearly recognise Dowman’s immense potential and are prepared to sanction a loan to foster his development, questions remain whether the young England youth international should be fast-tracked into Mikel Arteta’s first team. Comparisons to prodigies like Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, who regularly featured for club and country at the same age, fuel speculation that Dowman might be ready for a more prominent role with the Gunners.

Arsenal’s attacking options have been tested recently, with the club missing out on major summer signings and key players like Bukayo Saka struggling with fitness. This scenario arguably creates an opening for Dowman to step up and contribute meaningfully to Arsenal’s offensive dynamics. Retaining the youngster could address some of the squad’s immediate attacking challenges and inject fresh impetus into Arteta’s lineup.

As the January transfer window approaches, the decision between loaning Dowman out for game time or integrating him into Arsenal’s senior squad remains pivotal. With multiple clubs vying for his services and Arsenal’s willingness to facilitate a loan, the coming months will be crucial for the trajectory of one of English football’s brightest emerging stars.
