Enzo Maresca survives Bournemouth scare with late goals in Manchester City debut

Enzo Maresca narrowly escapes humiliation as Manchester City snatch late victory against Bournemouth

Enzo Maresca’s debut as Manchester City’s interim head coach teetered on disaster before a dramatic late turnaround secured a 2-1 win over Bournemouth. The Italian, stepping into the massive shoes left by Pep Guardiola, faced intense scrutiny as his side appeared set for an embarrassing defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

City trailed for much of the match, struggling to impose their trademark dominance under Maresca’s nascent leadership. Bournemouth’s resilience and tactical discipline threatened to hand the visitors a shock victory, exposing vulnerabilities in City’s transitional phase. However, two decisive goals in the closing stages salvaged the result and spared Maresca from immediate questioning over his leadership credentials.

The match highlighted the enormous challenge Maresca faces in maintaining City’s high standards while adapting to his own style. Despite the shaky start, the late comeback demonstrated the squad’s quality and fighting spirit, providing a glimpse of hope for Maresca’s tenure. The Italian tactician skillfully avoided addressing questions about his early struggles post-match, instead focusing on the positives from the comeback.

This narrow escape underscores the pressure mounting on Maresca to fill Guardiola’s void and deliver results swiftly. The late goals not only earned valuable points but also bought Maresca crucial time to settle into his role. As Manchester City continue their campaign, all eyes will remain on how the former assistant translates his vision into consistent victories.

Maresca’s ability to manage expectations and galvanize a star-studded squad will be vital in the coming weeks. The Etihad faithful witnessed a tense introduction to his reign, but the resilience shown could signal the beginning of a new chapter for Manchester City under his guidance.
