Jamie Carragher warns Liverpool and English football need Florian Wirtz to succeed this season

Jamie Carragher warns Liverpool and English football need Florian Wirtz to succeed this season

Jamie Carragher has issued a stark warning about Florian Wirtz’s future at Liverpool as the Premier League season looms. The German midfielder’s debut campaign at Anfield, following a £115 million transfer from Bayer Leverkusen, has been far from convincing. Despite tallying seven goals and 10 assists over 49 appearances, Wirtz failed to find the net in his first 22 games, drawing scrutiny from fans and pundits alike amid Liverpool’s trophyless season under Arne Slot.

With Liverpool preparing to face Newcastle this Sunday, Carragher insists Wirtz’s upcoming performances are critical—not just for his own career but for English football’s broader narrative. Speaking to The Telegraph, Carragher declared, “Florian Wirtz faces a make-or-break season, but more is at stake than his Liverpool career as he belatedly seeks to establish himself in the Premier League. English football needs Wirtz to succeed as much as Andoni Iraola, the new coach at Anfield.”

Carragher highlights the significance of Wirtz’s adaptation to the Premier League’s evolving style, noting how his success or failure could define his legacy at Liverpool. “How Wirtz fares at the start of this season will indicate whether he will be viewed as the right signing in the wrong era for Liverpool, moving to Merseyside just as the Premier League’s preferred style reverted to set-piece dominance,” Carragher explained.

The former Liverpool defender did not shy away from the consequences if Wirtz fails to meet expectations. “Failure to do so would embarrass the club that invested so much in a footballer they presumed to be a symbol of a golden future, and more than probably continue the trend of highly rated attackers believing Spain and Germany a better fit for their abilities,” he warned.

Wirtz’s Bundesliga record underpins the high hopes pinned on him: 21 goals and 23 assists across two seasons at Bayer Leverkusen. If he can replicate that form at Liverpool, the Reds could mount a serious title challenge this season. As anticipation builds around what Wirtz can deliver against Newcastle, the pressure is firmly on the 23-year-old to prove his £115 million price tag was a worthy investment for Liverpool’s future.
