Borussia Dortmund secures Konstantinos Karetsas from Genk for €32m plus bonuses

Borussia Dortmund Secures Konstaninos Karetsas in €32 Million Deal, Leaving Milan in the Dust

Borussia Dortmund has sealed a high-profile transfer agreement with KRC Genk for the acquisition of 18-year-old Greek prodigy Konstaninos Karetsas, finalising a deal reportedly worth €32 million plus performance-related add-ons. The move decisively outpaced AC Milan, who failed to present a competitive offer in time despite attempts to engage through a direct call with Sporting Lisbon’s coach Ruben Amorim, showcasing their vision for the player’s development.

The negotiation concluded in Dortmund’s favour after director of sport Ole Book personally intervened, flying in to secure the final terms and outmaneuver Milan’s slower approach. Initial asking demands by Genk stood at €40 million, with Dortmund’s first offer—including €30 million upfront plus €5 million in bonuses—falling just short but ultimately paving the way for a successful agreement with add-ons structured to be readily attainable, including a percentage of any future transfer revenue.

Karetsas, a creative midfielder excelling in a trequartista role, represents a profile currently absent at Milan. His ability to orchestrate play from an advanced midfield position has attracted considerable attention, but Dortmund’s guarantee of Champions League football was a decisive factor that Milan could not match, leaving the Rossoneri trailing in their pursuit.

The Greek international’s dynamic playing style and youthful potential mark him as a strategic asset for Dortmund’s squad development. With Champions League exposure and a clear pathway to first-team minutes, Karetsas is poised to make a significant impact in one of Europe’s elite competitions.

Borussia Dortmund’s swift and determined action has thus ensured they clinch a major talent before rivals could mobilise their resources, underscoring their ambition and operational efficiency in the transfer market. Milan’s hesitation and reliance on off-field negotiations ultimately cost them a coveted creative midfielder who could have reshaped their midfield options.
