World Cup final referee Slavko Vincic never oversaw Spain loss or Argentina win

World Cup final referee Slavko Vincic never oversaw Spain loss or Argentina win

Slavko Vincic Makes History as Referee for 2026 World Cup Final: Contrasting Records with Spain and Argentina Add Intrigue

Slavko Vincic will take center stage as the referee for the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup Final between Argentina and Spain, marking a pinnacle achievement in his officiating career. The Slovenian official, renowned for his extensive experience across European and World Cup fixtures, openly expressed his astonishment and pride upon receiving FIFA’s call to manage the tournament’s biggest match.

In a video message released by FIFA, Vincic described the moment he was informed of his appointment: “So, first of all, a shock. Then happiness. I was shaking, so it’s an incredible honor to get the World Cup final. It’s something that… it’s only a dream for a referee, for a young referee when they start. So, I’m very proud, very proud of myself, my team. It’s very difficult to put everything into words, but I’m very proud to represent my country, Slovenia, in the biggest sporting event in the world. So, yeah, I’m very proud. My team is very proud and we will do our best.”

Vincic’s track record in matches involving this year’s finalists introduces a layer of intrigue as the world awaits the outcome. Spain boasts an unblemished record under Vincic’s supervision, having never suffered a defeat in four matches officiated by the Slovenian. On the other hand, Argentina’s sole encounter with Vincic proved historic—he was the referee when the Albiceleste fell 3-2 to Saudi Arabia in their opening match of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Despite that shock loss, Argentina ultimately triumphed in the tournament, lifting the trophy in a dramatic turnaround.

This year’s tournament has already seen Vincic in action during the group stage, overseeing Brazil vs. Morocco and Algeria vs. Jordan. Notably, he also managed Mexico’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the Round of 32, a match marked by Piero Hincapie’s red card for communicating with an opponent while covering his mouth.

As Vincic prepares for the most prestigious assignment of his career, the football world will be watching closely—not only for his performance on the pitch but also for the remarkable storylines his presence brings to the final between Spain and Argentina. His contrasting records with the two finalists add an extra dimension to a showdown already brimming with anticipation.
