Roma secure €35m deal for Santiago Castro from Bologna with Dovbyk loan included

Roma have secured a major transfer coup, reaching a €35 million agreement with Bologna for the acquisition of Argentine centre-forward Santiago Castro. After a summer of unsuccessful pursuits, including targets like Mason Greenwood, Crysencio Summerville, and Nicolo Tresoldi, Gian Piero Gasperini's side has finally landed the attacking reinforcement they desperately sought.

The deal, confirmed by transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, includes a significant €35 million fee plus a 10% sell-on clause, underscoring Roma’s commitment to bolstering their frontline. Castro, who arrived at Bologna for just €13.2 million from Velez Sarsfield in January 2024, represents a lucrative capital gain for the Italian club. His departure marks a strategic victory for Bologna, who have capitalized on his rising market value.

In a related move, Roma’s Artem Dovbyk is set to join Bologna on loan with an option to buy. However, this transaction is being treated independently and is not part of a player-plus-cash swap. Di Marzio highlights that Castro's desire to leave Bologna and Roma's ability to offer Dovbyk as a temporary solution were pivotal in smoothing negotiations between the clubs.

Castro's recent performances have drawn attention, notably his clash with Roma’s Manu Kone during the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 at Stadio Olimpico on March 19, 2026. His attacking prowess was also on display during Bologna's Coppa Italia fixture against Lazio on February 11, 2026, where he scored a crucial goal.

This acquisition signals Roma’s renewed ambition to strengthen their attack after a summer fraught with missed opportunities. With Castro now on board, Gasperini can look forward to integrating a proven striker who has demonstrated his capacity to perform at the highest level in Serie A. The €35 million investment, coupled with a strategic loan of Dovbyk, positions Roma to challenge more aggressively in upcoming competitions.
