FIFA clears Harry Kane of yellow card after penalty confusion at World Cup

FIFA clears Harry Kane of yellow card after penalty confusion at World Cup

England captain Harry Kane will face Norway in Miami without the threat of suspension after widespread confusion over a yellow card issued during the Three Lions’ recent clash with Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. Initial reports and broadcast graphics suggested Kane had been cautioned following a controversial penalty incident, sparking fears that the striker—who is chasing the Golden Boot at World Cup 2026—might be forced to sit out England’s crucial quarter-final.

The incident unfolded in the second half when Kane, contesting a high ball, was adjudged to have fouled Mexico’s Brian Gutierrez. Referee Alireza Faghani pointed to the spot after a VAR review, and in the ensuing chaos, surrounded by players from both teams, he brandished a yellow card. Television graphics flashed Kane’s name, fueling speculation that England’s star forward had been booked.

However, closer scrutiny has revealed the yellow card was in fact shown to defender Marc Guehi. According to FIFA’s official match report, Guehi received the caution in the 68th minute, and not Kane as initially reported. The misleading broadcast graphics were the source of the confusion, but the official records have now set the record straight.

The situation was further complicated by the disciplinary stakes for England. Five players had entered the match on a booking, only for Jordan Henderson’s injury to sideline him for the rest of the tournament, reducing the list of those at risk. With the clarification on Kane, only one England player remains under threat of suspension for accumulation of yellow cards.

As a result, all concerns about Kane’s eligibility for the upcoming showdown with Norway have been dispelled. The England camp can now focus solely on the quarter-final, where Kane’s goal-scoring prowess will be vital as the team continues its pursuit of World Cup glory.
