Leylah Fernandez Triumphs in Singapore, Overcome with Emotion Addressing Filipino Fans

Leylah Fernandez launched her Singapore Open campaign emphatically, defeating Kyoka Okamura 6-2, 6-3 to secure a spot in the Round of 16. The Canadian player, carrying Filipino heritage through her mother, was visibly moved as she acknowledged the enthusiastic Filipino crowd that packed Centre Court, many traveling from beyond Singapore to support her.

“I’m just glad to be playing in front of you guys,” Fernandez said during her post-match interview. “The Singaporean fans, and I know there’s a lot of Pinoy fans here. There we go. So, Salamat for all the support. It truly means a lot to me.” Her heartfelt words reflected the deep connection she feels with her Filipino supporters, who have become an important source of encouragement throughout her career.

Fernandez entered the WTA 500 event in Singapore via a wildcard and is eager to make a significant impact in her debut appearance at this tournament. Although the straight-sets victory might suggest a dominant performance, the match was far from straightforward. Okamura put up a formidable fight, breaking Fernandez’s serve twice and forcing 13 break-point situations. Notably, Okamura saved two match points in the seventh game of the second set, demonstrating resilience before Fernandez ultimately closed out the match.

Serving proved challenging for Okamura, who was broken five times and struggled under pressure as Fernandez created 22 break-point chances. Despite Okamura’s tenacity, the Canadian’s superior play prevailed. Fernandez’s next opponent will be Alycia Parks, who currently leads their head-to-head 2-1, including a recent straight-sets victory at the French Open. However, with the crowd likely favoring Fernandez, the Canadian may find the extra motivation needed to overturn the record.

Fernandez’s popularity in Southeast Asia is significant, especially in the Philippines, where she enjoys a passionate fanbase. She has also expressed admiration for fellow Filipino player Alexandra Eala, calling her “such an amazing player, and most importantly, such an amazing person” in a pre-tournament press conference. Fernandez praised Eala’s humility and kindness and highlighted the unwavering support the Filipino community extends to their athletes worldwide.

“The Filipino community are super supportive of their players, and I felt that welcome when I came on tour,” Fernandez said. “Wherever I was around the world there was always a beautiful crowd that was supporting me, and to have Alex there too really shows how much the Filipino community loves to support one of their own. So it’s really nice.”

Eala, who has also garnered massive Filipino support, consistently draws large, sold-out crowds, with ticket demand skyrocketing, as seen recently at the US Open. It is anticipated that a strong Filipino presence will again fill the stands when Eala faces Tatiana Prozorova in the Singapore Open Round of 16.

Leylah Fernandez’s emotional tribute to her Filipino fans underscores the powerful bond between athlete and supporters, a dynamic that fuels her determination on the court as she advances deeper into the tournament.
