Carlos Alcaraz played a pivotal role in Team Europe’s triumph at this year’s Laver Cup, delivering a crucial victory over Taylor Fritz on Saturday that significantly influenced the overall outcome. The seven-time Grand Slam champion emphasized the importance of his participation in the event, marking only his second tournament back after a five-month injury hiatus.

“For me, being here is fantastic,” Alcaraz expressed. “It’s amazing to return and be part of Team Europe at the Laver Cup. Especially after being out for five months, this is my second tournament, so I needed matches to regain my rhythm, see how my body would respond, and get back to feeling competitive.” The Spaniard highlighted how the matches helped him assess his recovery and rebuild confidence on court. “I’m very happy to have played some matches here, to verify that my level is good, and to feel strong on the court again.”

Beyond his personal comeback, Alcaraz described the unique atmosphere of the Laver Cup and the joy of competing in a team format. “Winning the Laver Cup with these guys is always special. I love that feeling. I enjoyed supporting my teammates from the bench. It’s a truly unique and special format that I adore being part of. You have to use everything to your advantage, and I’m using this tournament to find my joy again. I love playing, and every time I step onto the court, I enjoy it because playing with these guys is different. It’s a team event, so you play not only for yourself but for your teammates and the players supporting you from the sidelines. It’s fantastic.”

Alcaraz also reflected on the playing conditions at the Laver Cup, particularly the slower court surfaces. “It’s not a problem for me to play on slower courts, especially given my serve isn’t among the most powerful,” he said. He discussed the evolution of tennis surfaces and equipment with team captain Yannick Noah, noting, “In the past, courts were much faster. Now, they are slowing down, but I think it’s less about the courts and more about the balls.” The Spaniard concluded by stressing his adaptability: “I try to adjust my game as best as possible for every tournament I enter. Obviously, having a great captain and vice-captain by your side is fantastic.”

Alcaraz’s candid insights reveal his determination to return to peak form while embracing the distinctive camaraderie and strategic challenges of the Laver Cup format, underscoring his vital contribution to Team Europe’s victory.
