Rafael Nadal Signals a ‘New Chapter’ as Coaching Future Remains Uncertain
Rafael Nadal, the legendary King of Clay, continues to shape the tennis world from beyond the baseline following his retirement in 2024. While he has stepped away from competitive play, Nadal remains a powerful influence through his Rafael Nadal Academy in Spain, a proving ground for rising stars such as Alex Eala and Coleman Wong. This week marks Nadal’s return to the court at the Rafael Nadal Academy Slam, an exhibition event that rekindles his rivalry with Andy Murray by pitting their teams against each other.
The Spanish exhibition features Nadal alongside Carlos Moya, Richard Gasquet, and David Ferrer facing off against Murray, Fabio Fognini, Marat Safin, and Dominic Thiem. Ahead of the event, Nadal addressed speculation about a possible comeback as a coach on the ATP Tour. Speaking to Sports Illustrated, he was clear yet cautiously open: “You should never say never in life. Right now, coaching is not something I’m considering at all.”
Nadal elaborated on his current priorities, revealing the toll constant travel has taken on his personal life. “In recent months, I have been traveling almost every week and rarely making it home; that is exactly what I want to change in the coming years,” he explained. “As I have said before, I have been traveling practically non-stop lately. It would be even worse if I were working as a coach.”
The 38-year-old icon expressed his eagerness to embrace new pursuits beyond the tour. “I enjoyed every second on the Tour, but now it’s time to write a new chapter in my life. I have my family, many exciting projects, and a constant stream of new tasks,” Nadal affirmed.
Since hanging up his racket, Nadal has established a museum at his Academy and has seen his career immortalized in a Netflix documentary released earlier this year. Despite stepping back from active competition, Nadal’s mentorship continues to bear fruit, particularly in the meteoric rise of Alex Eala. The young Filipino star, who trained at the Nadal Academy, captured her first WTA title at the Washington Open in 2026 and has broken into the world’s top 20 rankings.
Reflecting on Eala’s rapid ascent, Nadal praised her remarkable talent and character: “I’ve been lucky enough to know Alex since she began her journey at Rafa Nadal Academy, and have closely followed her tremendous career. At just 19, Alex beat three Grand Slam champion players at the 2025 Miami Open. This year, she won a WTA 500 tournament [in Washington], becoming the first player from the Philippines to break into the world’s top 20.”
He continued, “She still has plenty of room to grow. One of her greatest strengths is precisely her ability to listen, learn, and keep improving. More importantly, Alex remains a wonderful person—warm, approachable, and humble.”
Nadal also highlighted the challenges Eala has overcome. “It isn’t easy to handle becoming a true phenomenon at such a young age, and she deserves a lot of credit for keeping her feet on the ground. Now, all that remains is to keep enjoying watching her progress.”
As Nadal balances his expanding off-court ventures and family life, his influence resonates strongly through the next generation. Alex Eala, the jewel of the Rafael Nadal Academy, will continue her 2026 WTA campaign at the upcoming Wuhan Open in October, carrying forward the legacy crafted under Nadal’s watchful eye.
