In short
  • Alexandra Eala beat Patcharin Cheapchandej 6-1, 6-0 in her opening Asian Games match in Nagoya, Japan.
  • Rain moved the tournament indoors, but Eala still won in just under 55 minutes.
  • She next faces Joanna Garland, and says she wants gold despite skipping the China Open.

Alexandra Eala stormed into the Asian Games with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory over World No. 517 Patcharin Cheapchandej, beginning her gold medal campaign in Nagoya, Japan. Despite unexpected rain forcing the tournament indoors onto practice courts, the Filipino phenom remained unfazed, dispatching her opponent in just under 55 minutes. Eala’s dominant performance sets up a tantalizing second-round clash against Joanna Garland, famed for her remarkable One Point Slam run to a final appearance.

Eala has embraced the role of outright favourite, following the blueprint laid down by former gold medalist Zheng Qinwen. Her decision to skip the China Open this week has stirred controversy, as it risks a fine and potential ranking point penalties due to tournament withdrawal rules. The Filipino star faces an uphill battle off-court, needing a valid reason for her absence from Beijing’s event to avoid sanctions. Yet, Eala remains resolute in her pursuit of Asian Games glory.

“Of course I want the gold medal, everyone wants it. I’ve worked very hard for it,” Eala stated with determination. “I’m here to win, like in every tournament I play, but a loss can always happen. It happens, and quite often. If it were to happen to me, I would have to accept it and try to learn from it to come back stronger. But obviously, I would love to leave with the gold medal.”

Her bold gamble to prioritise Nagoya over Beijing underlines her unwavering focus on the Asian Games title. With a powerful start and steely mindset, Alexandra Eala is not just participating—she is here to dominate and claim the coveted gold for the Philippines.
