John Catlin admits he does not know whether he will receive an offer to join LIV Golf on a permanent basis in 2027. The American golfer is living with uncertainty as the league tries to restructure following the departure of several of its leading players.
After the first round of the HotelPlanner Tour Grand Final in Mallorca on 29 October, Catlin shared his frustration at the lack of clarity. “I don’t know what they are telling the players, so I don’t know whether or not I’m getting the same information. It feels like we’re in a kind of waiting game,” he said.
His concern comes as several high-profile players leave the league, which could open up new opportunities for him.
A league in restructuring
The 35-year-old acknowledged that the exit of other players could indeed create a window to secure a permanent LIV contract but, as he put it, “nobody knows”.
The uncertainty affects Catlin and other players awaiting an outcome on the future of the league, which is undergoing significant restructuring after a $300m investment from BC Partners.
Focus on the HotelPlanner Tour Grand Final
While the league tries to adapt, Catlin is concentrating on the HotelPlanner Tour Grand Final, where he opened with a 66, six under par, just one shot off the lead.
The American wants to regain his DP World Tour card, on a circuit he knows well and where he has already won three titles. “I’m trying to take it week by week and do my best,” he said, stressing the importance of the DP World Tour to his career.
Catlin has a solid record in Europe, with wins at events such as the Andalucía Masters and the Irish Open. However, his time with LIV Golf has been marked by frustrated attempts to secure a permanent place, having played as a reserve on several occasions and taken part in events such as LIV Golf UK.
Catlin’s situation reflects the difficulties of many golfers in a league that has yet to consolidate its position. Attracting and retaining players is essential for LIV Golf to secure the funding it needs for next season, which makes the future of the league and its stars uncertain.
With his recent victory at the Link Hong Kong Open, Catlin secured his first appearance at the Masters and qualification for the 2027 Open Championship, which could give his career fresh impetus. Even so, his search for a definitive opportunity at LIV Golf remains unanswered.
