The elimination of Mexico from the World Cup, at the hands of England, hit the host nation like a bomb, marking one of the most painful defeats ever experienced at the Estadio Azteca. The English won 3-2 in a frantic and chaotic match held in Mexico City, thus securing their place in the quarter-finals—a rare achievement for any team that visits this true bastion of Mexican football.

This result represented only the third defeat for Mexico in official matches at the legendary Estadio Azteca since its inauguration in 1966. The symbolism is even greater considering that 1966 was precisely the year England won the World Cup for the only time. Now, the English advance to face Norway, continuing their pursuit of a place in the semi-finals of this World Cup held in North America, where Mexico hosted matches alongside the United States and Canada. With this elimination, there will be no more matches of this tournament on Mexican soil.

The Mexican press did not hold back in their words to describe the shock felt throughout the country. ESPN Deportes highlighted the deep disappointment experienced by fans, writing: “The hopes of the Estadio de la Ciudad de Mexico were shattered in the 101st minute. This time, the Mexican fans refused to give up, just like their team. They did not abandon their side until the last minute, clinging to the dream of, for the first time, being able to crush a giant like England.” The channel also classified the defeat as “the most painful ‘Aztecazo’ of all,” noting: “Once again, the reality of ‘we played like never before and lost like always’.”

Other media outlets, such as El Universal and AS México, also highlighted the term “Aztecazo,” with the latter even referring to the “definitive 'Aztecazo'.” El Universal sought to emphasize the Mexican team's stance, stating: “Mexico bid farewell to the World Cup with their heads held high.” The newspaper also recalled the words of goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa on the eve of the match: “Ochoa warned the day before: clinical finishing defines great teams… And so it was. Jude Bellingham served as a reminder with his brace.”

With England celebrating one of the most significant victories in its recent history on Mexican soil, the team now moves on to face Norway, in search of a place in the semi-finals. For Mexico, the elimination bitterly closes the chapter of the World Cup on its territory, leaving a deep wound among fans and the press that will be hard to forget anytime soon.
