Crystal Palace may be on the verge of losing another of its key figures, with the potential departure of French forward Jean-Philippe Mateta becoming increasingly likely amid strong interest from Nottingham Forest. This possible transfer comes at a time when the London club has already seen several important names leave Selhurst Park, exacerbating the instability heading into the next season.
Jean-Philippe Mateta, the French international, has just one year left on his contract and his future is shrouded in uncertainty. Former Premier League scout Mick Brown believes that Crystal Palace is not in a strong position to retain the forward and admits that the club could be “powerless” if a tempting offer arises. Brown also points to Nottingham Forest, now managed by Oliver Glasner, Mateta's former coach, as the most likely destination for the 29-year-old player. While there is known interest from Manchester United, Forest appears to be the more concrete option at this stage.

In statements to Football Insider, Mick Brown did not hold back in his analysis of Mateta's contractual situation and the possible scenarios for his future: “Crystal Palace may be powerless when it comes to Mateta's future this summer. When we look at his contractual situation and the idea that he wanted to leave in January, there is a possibility that a proposal could arise that the club cannot refuse.” Brown also emphasizes: “Nottingham Forest is the name being mentioned at the moment, they are interested in signing a new forward and Mateta fits many of the requirements. He scored goals in the Premier League, which makes him an immediate upgrade over the current options, and now that Glasner has gone there, it is interesting. Therefore, if Forest makes a significant offer for Mateta, Palace may have no choice but to let him go, because otherwise it may be difficult to keep him.”
The departure of Mateta would be yet another blow for Crystal Palace, which has recently had to deal with the exit of Glasner from the managerial position. The club has also lost key players such as Eberechi Eze, who transferred to Arsenal last summer, and Marc Guehi, who moved to Manchester City in January. There are also doubts surrounding the future of Adam Wharton, although there have been no concrete developments regarding negotiations with other clubs.
Nottingham Forest, for its part, is also undergoing a period of change, having seen its midfielder Elliot Anderson leave for Manchester City in a high-value transfer. Forest's interest in Mateta fits into a clear strategy to strengthen the squad, seeking solutions to address significant departures and ensure quality in the attack.
The outcome of this situation could have a significant impact on both Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest, with both clubs trying to reposition themselves in the transfer market and preparing for new challenges in the upcoming season.
