“FIFA under pressure after controversial acquittal of Balogun in the 2026 World Cup”

The scandal surrounding the overturning of Folarin Balogun's red card is shaking the foundations of FIFA and provoking intense reactions throughout the football world. The American forward, who represents Monaco, had his punishment unexpectedly revoked just before the crucial Round of 16 match in the 2026 World Cup, reigniting accusations of a lack of transparency and impartiality within the sport's governing body.

Balogun had been sent off with a direct red card during the United States' victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 16. However, the suspension was lifted by FIFA in time for the clash against Belgium, following a controversial intervention: U.S. President Donald Trump publicly confirmed that he spoke with Gianni Infantino to request that Balogun be cleared, a wish that was ultimately granted despite a wave of criticism.

Balogun's return did not yield the desired result for the Americans. Inspired, Belgium triumphed 4-1 in Seattle, securing their place in the quarter-finals and leaving the U.S. out of the tournament, just as had already happened to the other co-hosts, Canada and Mexico.

The FIFA decision is now under intense scrutiny, with UEFA describing the measure as “unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustifiable.” Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, reacted strongly to the incident, emphasizing that this case is merely a symptom of deeper issues in world football. In public statements, Tebas said: “The worst part is that much of the football world is aware of this, but too many prefer to maintain a complicit silence.” The Spanish official continued, stating: “Because it is more comfortable to remain silent than to defend independence, transparency, and good governance in football.”

Tebas went even further in his criticism: “World football deserves institutions that are accountable, respect the rules, and govern with transparency—not with unilateral, discretionary, and arbitrary decisions that erode the trust of fans, clubs, leagues, and players. The Balogun case only reinforces this perception; it is just the tip of the iceberg. In fact, if the rules are systematically applied arbitrarily, trust disappears. And without trust, there is no institutional credibility.”

The atmosphere of distrust is set to keep the pressure on Gianni Infantino, who is compelled to justify his actions in the face of criticism from the major entities of European football and the leaders of the most powerful leagues. It remains to be seen whether this controversy will lead to effective changes in the governance of world football or if it will simply be another episode quickly forgotten in the media whirlwind.
