Bruno Fernandes broke his silence after Portugal's painful elimination from the World Cup, launching an emotional message on social media. The captain of Manchester United, who saw his national team knocked out by Spain in the round of 16, expressed his dismay and frustration at the unexpected outcome of a campaign that promised much more.

Portugal arrived at the tournament in North America as one of the top favorites, fueling hopes of winning the most coveted trophy in world football. However, right from the opening match, the team faced a surprising 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo, a result that served as a warning sign. The Portuguese response was emphatic: a 5-0 thrashing of Uzbekistan restored confidence and fueled Portuguese aspirations. This was followed by a goalless draw against Colombia, before Portugal secured qualification for the round of 16 in an electrifying match against Luka Modrić's Croatia.

The national team ended up facing Spain, in a match filled with rivalry and expectations. The decision came in stoppage time when Arsenal midfielder, Mikel Merino, scored the decisive goal that sent Spain to the quarter-finals and marked Portugal's premature exit from the competition.

In the aftermath of the match, Bruno Fernandes did not hide his disappointment and did not hold back criticism of the tactical approach of coach Roberto Martínez, whose departure from the position has since been confirmed. The midfielder also emphasized his initial confidence in the team's potential, lamenting that the objectives were not met. Days later, Fernandes decided to share his state of mind with fans through a statement on social media.

In a post made on the social network X, Bruno Fernandes wrote: “Sad, frustrated and disappointed.” The Portuguese international added: “This group of players raised my expectations, not only because of their quality but also because of the incredible group we have built over the years.” Fernandes did not forget those who stood by the team: “Thank you to all the players, coaching staff, and all the staff who supported us and helped us every day during the World Cup.” The captain also had a special message for the fans: “To all the Portuguese, a huge thank you for your support and belief.”

With the elimination confirmed and after a grueling cycle, Bruno Fernandes is now preparing to enjoy a three-week break before returning to Manchester United and starting preparations for the new season. The disappointment at the World Cup thus marks a moment of reflection for the midfielder and the national team, who will need to rethink the future after a campaign that fell short of expectations.
