Michael Carrick was impressed with the performance of the young players from Manchester United, particularly with the versatility of Jacob Devaney, even after the defeat in the first pre-season match against Wrexham. The match took place last Saturday, with the coach opting for two different teams in each half: the seniors in the first half and the young academy talents in the second half.
Carrick highlighted the superiority displayed by the younger players in the second half of the game. In statements to MUTV, he said: “I was really pleased with the team in the second half. I thought they controlled the game very well against a team that is not easy to face.” The coach also emphasized the quality and responsibility of the young players, acknowledging the difficulty in breaking through a compact defense, but expressing confidence in the development of their creativity and offensive effectiveness. “They can be very proud of themselves,” he added.

Among the young players, Jacob Devaney was the one who caught the coach's attention the most. The 19-year-old defensive midfielder, who spent the second half of last season on loan at St Mirren, surprised everyone by being positioned in the center of defense, a role he is not accustomed to playing. Carrick praised his performance against Wrexham's physical forward, Kieffer Moore, stating: “He played as a center-back, which is not his natural position. He has played there a bit, but not much, and I thought he did very well.” Devaney's performance could increase his chances of being an option for the upcoming match against Rosenborg.
Another young player who received praise was Tyler Fletcher, who has been experiencing a period of significant growth, including his international debut and being called up for the World Cup with Scotland. Carrick highlighted Fletcher's maturity and leadership, as he captained the team in the second half of the match. “He has had an intense few months, he didn’t want to rest much after the World Cup and took on the responsibility of leading the team very well in the second half,” commented the coach.

The performances of these talents promise to fuel hopes that some of them may establish themselves as regular options in the first team of Manchester United next season. Carrick seems committed to investing in youth, valuing the courage and quality displayed in this friendly match.
