The controversy surrounding Bryson DeChambeau's penalty at The Open Championship continues to ignite the world of golf. The American golfer received a two-stroke penalty for allegedly improving the position of his ball on the 5th hole during the second round, a decision that has divided opinions.
The incident occurred on Friday when R&A officials reviewed the 5th hole after DeChambeau's round, in which he recorded a 66 with five birdies and one bogey, placing him just one stroke behind the leader, Lucas Herbert, after 36 holes. However, the penalty changed his score to 68 and dropped him to a tie for 5th place, three strokes behind the leader. This was the first cut that DeChambeau managed to make this season after missing the cut in the previous three majors.
Scottie Scheffler, the world number one and reigning champion of The Open, chose to remain silent on the matter. Although he admitted he had a lot to say, the American stated at a press conference on Saturday that it was not the appropriate time to comment, as he was focused on his performance in the tournament. “In fact, I have a lot to say. I haven't exactly decided what I want to say publicly. I don't feel like this is the time or place to talk. We're in the middle of a tournament, and I'm focused on what I need to do,” Scheffler said.
The R&A's decision sparked various reactions among other players and figures in golf. Sam Burns, the leader after 54 holes and DeChambeau's playing partner, expressed his support: “I didn’t think there was enough evidence to warrant that penalty. I felt bad for Bryson in the situation he found himself in.” Max Homa also disagreed with the decision, stating that he “did not agree with the two-shot penalty.” Xander Schauffele, the 2024 Open champion, called the situation “unfortunate” and argued that DeChambeau could have been given the benefit of the doubt.

The criticism was not limited to players. Donald Trump, the former president of the United States and a known supporter of DeChambeau, described the R&A's decision as “totally false” and “rigged,” accusing the organization of acting against the player due to his connection to the LIV Golf circuit.
