Rúben Amorim, former manager of Manchester United, admitted to having made “many mistakes” during his time at Old Trafford, an experience he now considers crucial for his new adventure at AC Milan. The 41-year-old coach was dismissed in January after 63 games in charge, where he achieved only 24 wins, 18 draws, and 21 losses.

Amorim, who took over at United in November 2024, saw his team finish in 15th place in the Premier League in his first season, just four points above the relegation zone. His preference for the 3-4-3 formation became a frequent topic of discussion, reflecting the difficulties he faced in implementing his ideas, which had made him one of the most respected coaches in Europe during his time at Sporting CP.

Now in Milan, the coach claims to be ready to learn from past mistakes. “They [Milan] appointed me because they felt I was the right person for the way I want to play,” Amorim declared to Sky Italia. “They want to play the same way, but I think they hired me not only for my success but also for my experience at a big club like Manchester United. They understood that I was prepared for this job, not just because of my past success, but also because of my failures. I believe that helped a lot in the meetings.”

When questioned about what went wrong at United, Amorim was clear: “The first thing is that it no longer matters. That’s the feeling. There is a story, then something happens, the context changes, and we focus on the next challenge.” The coach reflected on the lessons he learned, stating that while it is difficult to pinpoint a single mistake, he is certain he made many. “When you do this kind of reflection and realize that it wasn’t just their fault, but also mine, I think you can be a better coach and a better man.”

AC Milan, who finished fifth in the last Serie A season, will compete in the Europa League, and Amorim sees this new stage as an opportunity to apply what he has learned.
