Michael Carrick was firm when asked about his future as Manchester United manager, even after the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea last Saturday. The pressure on the 45-year-old has increased considerably, as his side are now nine matches without a win in all competitions and sit a worrying 16th in the Premier League table.

Despite the speculation over whether he will remain in the job, Carrick showed confidence in saying he expects to still be in charge for the Champions League match against AS Roma next Tuesday. In an interview with TNT Sports, when asked directly whether he would stay, Carrick gave a clear and direct reply: “Yes!”

The defeat at Stamford Bridge was a heavy blow for Manchester United, with goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer sealing the outcome, while a red card for Lisandro Martínez complicated matters even further. The result not only deepened the sporting crisis, but also marked the club’s longest winless run since November 1988, an alarming statistic that underlines the seriousness of the situation.

The reaction of the club’s hierarchy is also revealing. Executives such as Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada took the unusual step of boarding the team bus after the match, a move that suggests discussions about the manager’s future are under way. At the same time, there are rumours of talks with possible replacements, such as Eddie Howe, leaving Carrick in a rather delicate position.

Although the manager has shown determination to focus on improving the team’s performances, his confidence does not guarantee he will stay in the job. The final decision rests with Manchester United’s hierarchy, who face a significant dilemma over which way to go. What is clear is that Carrick will have to find solutions quickly for a squad in crisis if he wants to avoid the worst-case scenario.
