Robert Lewandowski did not hold back when explaining his decision not to join Arsenal during his career, revealing that his desire to win titles was the main reason. The striker, who now plays in Major League Soccer for Chicago Fire, has enjoyed a remarkable career at top European clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Barcelona, where he scored an impressive 567 goals. Despite frequent links between Lewandowski and Arsenal, the Pole was never persuaded to move to London.

In 2014, Lewandowski admitted that former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny had tried to persuade him to sign for the club. “I can confirm that Wojciech tried to convince me to join Arsenal. We had several conversations about it. He was the one who talked most about what the club is like, what Arsène Wenger thinks of me,” the player said. However, the idea of joining the Gunners never appealed to him, and a recent joke that went viral on social media has shed light on the subject. Asked why he did not accept Arsenal’s offer, Lewandowski replied with humour: “I wanted to win some titles.”

He was quickly reminded that Arsenal won the Premier League last season for the first time in 22 years, to which Lewandowski retorted: “Maybe they wouldn’t have had to wait so long if I had joined Arsenal.” The player’s remark makes us wonder what might have been for the London club.

Arsenal’s interest in Lewandowski was genuine and, besides Szczęsny, Arsène Wenger also expressed a desire to sign him before he moved to Bayern Munich. “Yes, we looked at Lewandowski, but honestly he signed for Bayern a year and a half ago, everyone knows that,” Wenger said in January 2014. That statement shows that Arsenal were keeping a close eye on the Polish striker’s movements.

Had Lewandowski signed for Arsenal instead of joining Bayern, the 2014-15 season could have looked quite different. With the striker scoring 25 goals in his first season at Bayern, his presence at Arsenal would have been crucial, especially considering that the club relied on Alexis Sánchez and Olivier Giroud for most of their goals. The addition of the Pole could have helped the team win more trophies.

Lewandowski’s career continued on an upward path, culminating in 19 titles at Bayern, including eight Bundesliga championships and one Champions League. After his move to Barcelona in 2022, the striker added another seven trophies to his collection. What might have been for Arsenal remains a mystery, but the titles Lewandowski so craved were always more attainable at Bayern.
