Pierre Sage’s future as Crystal Palace manager looks increasingly uncertain after his side suffered a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat, this time against Liverpool. The Selhurst Park club are bottom of the table, with just seven points from a possible 30 since Sage took charge, succeeding Oliver Glasner in the summer.

Liverpool made the most of the chances Palace let slip, with Alexis Mac Allister opening the scoring with a header in the 40th minute from a well-rehearsed free-kick routine. The visitors doubled their lead 14 minutes into the second half, when Florian Wirtz finished with class after being set up by Bradley Barcola. Alexander Isak, who had been quiet throughout the match, missed a big chance before scoring his side’s third goal, his seventh in the league this season.

The hosts did manage a consolation goal with the last action of the match, Eddie Nketiah converting a penalty after Milos Kerkez was penalised. The atmosphere at Selhurst Park was understandably subdued, as the Eagles started the match behind. However, the fans had a brief moment of hope when a Palace attack ended with a shot from Yeremy Pino that hit the post of the Liverpool goal.

Despite Liverpool’s possession, they did not manage to create many clear chances. Palace, for their part, had enough opportunities to have scored before Nketiah’s goal, with goalkeeper Alisson Becker making six important saves during the match.

After a disappointing defeat to Fenerbahçe in Europe during the week, Liverpool climbed to fourth in the Premier League, now nine points behind leaders Arsenal. As the pressure mounts on Sage, Crystal Palace’s immediate future is at stake, and the next matchday will be crucial for the manager’s survival and for his team’s recovery in the competition.
