The expectation surrounding Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) was high following their impressive UEFA Champions League triumph in the 2024/25 season. However, defending this prestigious title has proven to be a challenging task for the team managed by Luis Enrique, who, despite managing to advance to the knockout stage after an intense battle against Monaco, has not had a straightforward path this season.

PSG, which had to face a playoff to secure its place in the knockout stage, is repeating a narrative it experienced the previous year, where the team also needed a similar approach before unleashing its full brilliance. This journey, marked by challenges, raises questions about the difficulty of maintaining the elite of European football at such a high level, especially when considering the history of teams that have managed to triumph in consecutive editions of the Champions League.

The rich history of the competition is filled with great clubs that have made their mark by winning titles in consecutive seasons. However, the list is short and consists of legendary teams that have become icons of the sport. PSG is now one of those teams, but its struggle to replicate the achievement of 2024/25 highlights the complexity and pressure involved in defending such a coveted title.

So far, only two teams have recently stood out in winning consecutive titles in the Champions League. Real Madrid, the true powerhouse of European football, was the last club to achieve this feat, winning three editions in a row between 2014/15 and 2016/17. Prior to that, AC Milan had already recorded consecutive victories in the late 1980s. Other iconic teams, such as Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Ajax, and Benfica, also had their moments of glory during times when club football was more concentratedly dominated.

PSG, with its victory in the 2024/25 season, joined the select group of clubs that have won the Champions League, becoming the 24th club to lift the trophy since its inception in 1955/56, when it was still known as the European Cup. Despite its recent rise, the journey to defend the title is fraught with uncertainties and fierce rivalries.

The Real Madrid remains the most successful club in the history of the Champions League, with an impressive 15 titles, more than any other team in the competition. Along with AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Barcelona, they form the elite group of clubs that have won at least five titles in the tournament.

While PSG struggles to solidify its position at the top of European football, the eyes of the world will be on their next performance. Will the Parisian team overcome the challenges and repeat the glorious feat of the previous season? The answer to this question could define not only their history but also the narrative of the UEFA Champions League in the years to come.
