Mark Lye demands severe punishment for Tiger Woods.

The world of professional golf is once again in turmoil, but this time not due to impressive shots on the greens. The controversy involves one of the sport’s biggest icons, Tiger Woods, who now finds himself at the center of a scandal following his recent arrest for driving under the influence in Florida. This incident, which occurred on Friday, March 27, 2026, raises serious questions about responsibility and the image Woods projects, not only as an athlete but as a public figure.

Mark Lye, a golf veteran and former professional player, did not hold back in his criticism and called for severe action from the PGA Tour. “The first step should be to remove Tiger’s name from the LA Open Genesis… it’s not a good image. Then, the Hero. As a former player and commentator, I wouldn’t be able to show my face again. His children will also suffer; it’s shameful and selfish,” Lye stated in a post on X, which quickly gained attention.

Lye’s words were echoed during an appearance on the “Fox & Friends Weekend” program, where he reiterated the need for punishment. “I don’t like to sugarcoat things. The way I see it, there has to be some kind of punishment or suspension from the game,” Lye asserted, making it clear that he believes Woods’ situation goes far beyond a simple mistake.

The incident that led to Woods’ arrest involved his vehicle, a Land Rover, which collided with a cleaning truck, resulting in a rollover. Although there were no serious injuries, the issue of liability and reckless driving is undeniable. Despite a breathalyzer test revealing a 0% blood alcohol content, Woods refused to take a urine test, which culminated in his detention for DUI. He spent eight hours in jail, the minimum required by Florida law, before being released on bail.

Lye not only criticizes Woods’ conduct but also calls for the removal of the athlete as host of major events, such as the Genesis Invitational and the Hero World Challenge, as well as questioning his position as chair of the Future Competition Committee. Woods’ influence in the sport is immeasurable, and Lye argues that, given his stature, a clear example is necessary for other athletes.

This is not the first time that Tiger Woods has found himself in trouble related to driving under the influence; in May 2017, he was found asleep at the wheel and, after a toxicology test, the presence of five prescription medications was revealed. On that occasion, Woods ultimately pleaded guilty to reckless driving, paid a fine, and participated in a 12-month diversion program.

Despite the storm, several figures from the golf world and society expressed support for Woods. Anthony Kim, who has also faced challenges related to addiction, was one of the voices of support. “I don’t know what @tigerwoods is going through and it’s none of my business. As someone who deals with my own issues, I pray that the man who positively influenced my life and millions of others overcomes what he is going through. Trust in God, 1% sober is amazing,” said Kim, demonstrating empathy and understanding.

Donald Trump, a close friend of Woods, also commented on the incident. “I’m very sorry. He’s going through some tough times. There was an accident, that’s all I know. He’s an incredible person,” Trump stated, reflecting a support that contrasts with calls for punishment from others.

The dilemma faced by Tiger Woods highlights the division in public reactions, where compassion and criticism coexist. As the PGA Tour considers its options, the pressure to take action against the golf icon will only increase, making it clear that the road to recovery will be as challenging as the game itself.
