Alexander Zverev Tops Cameron Norrie at China Open, Praises ATP 500 Format and Calls for Masters 1000 Reforms

Alexander Zverev secured a straight-sets victory over Cameron Norrie, 7-6(1), 6-4, in the opening round of the China Open, asserting his status as the tournament’s top seed. The German ace will face Shang Juncheng next as he pursues his first ATP 500 title of the season. After the match, Zverev openly expressed his admiration for the ATP 500 event structure, contrasting it with the current Masters 1000 format and advocating for a return to the earlier system that fostered more compelling early-round clashes.

“I love it. I think Masters 1000 events should be like that. That’s what it used to be. Masters 1000 events, eight players had a bye, the rest didn’t,” Zverev explained during the post-match press conference. “You saw first-round matches which were unbelievable. The No. 16 in the world could play the No. 17 in the world. The No. 9 in the world could play the No. 18 in the world. I think that was unbelievable to see.” He further lamented the current format where fans must wait until the third round to witness high-caliber matchups, emphasizing his appreciation for the unchanged ATP 500 structure: “The 500 format hasn’t changed, which I really like. I think the format here is great. I have nothing bad to say about it.”

Zverev’s endorsement carries weight given his history at the ATP 500 level, where he has claimed six titles, most recently triumphing at the 2025 Bavarian Championships. However, he has only reached one final at this tier since then—the 2025 Vienna Open, where he fell to Jannik Sinner. This season, prior to Beijing, Zverev’s ATP 500 campaign included a runner-up finish to Miomir Kecmanovic at the Mexican Open, and semifinal exits at the BMW Open and Halle Open, losing respectively to Flavio Cobolli and Taylor Fritz.

Notably, Zverev has yet to capture the China Open crown. Last year, his bid ended in the quarterfinals against Daniil Medvedev. Meanwhile, the tour’s rising star Rafael Jodar has been making waves in his debut season. The 19-year-old Spaniard has contested all four Grand Slams’ main draws and reached the quarterfinals of the French Open. Jodar also boasts two finals appearances, winning the Grand Prix Hassan II against Marco Trungelliti before finishing runner-up to Taylor Fritz at the Citi Open. Zverev himself ended Jodar’s impressive run at the Paris Major with a straight-sets quarterfinal victory.

Speaking at the Laver Cup in September, Zverev praised Jodar’s potential: “I am training with Rafa Jodar. He is a young guy; he is super exciting. I think he is going to be unbelievable in a couple of years’ time. If he asks me, I will always try to help. If he doesn’t ask me, I don’t want to interfere with what he has. But if somebody asks me, I will always try and help.” Jodar’s recent form includes a first-round loss at the Japan Open and a win over Alexander Bublik representing Team Europe at the Laver Cup. He is slated to compete next at the Shanghai Masters beginning October 7, where he will seek to build on his best Masters 1000 run—a semifinal appearance at the Canadian Open, halted by Brandon Nakashima.

Zverev’s blend of on-court success and candid commentary on tournament formats highlights his influence as a leading figure in men’s tennis, while his mentorship of emerging talents like Jodar signals his commitment to shaping the sport’s future.
