Paula Badosa faced a brutal challenge in the quarter-finals of the Guangzhou Open, where extreme weather conditions led her to suffer an episode of heatstroke. The Spaniard, who started the match in dominant fashion, won the first set against Harriet Dart by an impressive 6-3, but could not maintain her momentum and ended up losing the next two sets, finishing the match with a score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Badosa began the match by comfortably winning three games and appeared to be in control. However, Dart managed to recover, winning 12 of the next 16 points. Although Badosa had shown herself to be the better player in the first set, the situation worsened drastically in the second set, where the intense heat became unbearable, leaving her suffering from heatstroke.

The set began level at 2-2, but Badosa’s condition deteriorated as the temperature climbed above 30 degrees Celsius. The player called for a medical timeout, but it did not change the course of the match. Dart quickly levelled the match, and the application of the heat rule allowed a 10-minute break, in the hope that Badosa could recover. Despite being close to fainting, the Spaniard decided to carry on playing.

After the break, Badosa seemed to regain some energy, securing an early break in the deciding set. However, Dart responded, breaking Badosa’s serve again to take a 5-3 lead. The Briton even had the chance to serve for the match, with a match point, but Badosa managed to save it and won the next game. It was not enough, though, as Dart closed out the match with a break to love, securing her place in the semi-finals.

Dart, who entered the tournament as a qualifier, expressed her delight at the win. “It was an incredible battle. I thought Paula started really strong. I was always behind, but I knew it was going to be a very tough match. I had to stay firm in the difficult moments and, luckily, I was able to take my chances today,” Dart said in her on-court interview. This victory marks the second time the Briton has reached the semi-finals of a WTA-level tournament.

With this win, Dart, who began the tournament ranked 115th, has climbed to 107th and has the chance to overtake Emma Raducanu in the rankings if she wins her semi-final. Her next opponent will be the young Chinese player Sun Xinran, who has also performed notably well in the tournament. The match promises to be electrifying, as both players are in great form and have never faced each other at professional level.
