Daniil Medvedev delivered a commanding performance at the US Open, overcoming French contender Hugo Gaston in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. After a turbulent summer marked by a controversial exit in Winston-Salem, the Russian showcased a revitalized game, particularly dominating on serve to secure his place in the tournament’s next round.

American Tommy Paul advanced impressively as well, rallying from a set down to defeat Coleman Wong 6-7, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. Daniel Merida Aguilar clinched a three-set victory over Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics, while Dino Prizmic edged out Alexander Shevchenko in a nail-biting five-set thriller, finishing 7-5 in the decider. Jiri Lehecka also progressed, beating Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta 6-1, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 to secure his second-round berth.

On the women’s side, third seed Jessica Pegula cruised past Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 6-2, affirming her status as a leading contender. The standout story came from Italian Lucrezia Stefanini, who battled fiercely to defeat Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Stefanini’s resilience was on full display after dropping the second set despite holding match points, before surging in the decider with a dominant six-game streak, including two crucial service breaks to pull away decisively.

Stefanini’s victory sets up an all-Italian second-round clash against Jasmine Paolini, who narrowly overcame Slovenia’s Veronika Erjavec in three sets. This highly anticipated derby promises intense competition following Paolini’s gritty 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win.

Other notable women’s winners included Leylah Fernandez, who dispatched Shuai Zhang 6-3, 6-2, and Marta Kostyuk, who overwhelmed Storm Hunter 6-4, 6-1. The US Open is already delivering thrilling encounters and dramatic storylines, with rising stars and established names pushing their limits on the global stage.
