Brighton coach criticizes Arsenal and referees for inconsistent rules.

Tension in the world of English football has increased following a scathing critique by Fabian Hurzeler, manager of Brighton, aimed at Arsenal and their coach Mikel Arteta. Following his team’s 0-1 defeat, Hurzeler did not hold back in describing the performance of the ‘Gunners’ and the referees, raising questions about the integrity of the game in the Premier League.

For him, the way Arsenal operates, especially in time-wasting situations, undermines the essence of football. “At this moment, I feel like they act according to their own rules, regardless of how they play. If they win the Premier League, no one will ask them how they won it,” he added.

Hurzeler, who had already had a disagreement with Arteta during the match, insisted that his focus is different: “I will never be the type of coach who tries to win this way. I want to develop players, I want my players to continue improving and playing football on the pitch.” His frustration is palpable, especially regarding how the game is being officiated by the referees.

In response to the criticisms, Mikel Arteta remained unfazed and, with a touch of sarcasm, commented: “What a surprise.” When pressed to elaborate on Hurzeler’s complaints, Arteta suggested that the Brighton manager frequently complained, implying that these criticisms were nothing new. “Just look back at previous games and you will find many similar comments,” he said, downplaying his colleague’s indignation.

The discussion intensified further when Hurzeler, in an interview with TNT Sports, expressed that his team deserved a penalty at the end of the first half, but acknowledged that accepting the referees’ decisions is part of the game. “For me, the most important thing is that the referee deals better with other things,” he said, pointing out that the Premier League needs to reformulate its rules. “What Arsenal did is not football, and that is what I told Arteta. I think everyone saw it, and each one should form their own opinion.”

Hurzeler suggested that the solution would involve issuing more yellow cards for time-wasting during matches, sarcastically questioning how often a goalkeeper throws themselves to the ground during games. “Have you ever seen a goalkeeper fall to the ground three times in a match?” he challenged.

Arsenal’s victory, sealed by a deflected shot from Bukayo Saka, not only extended their lead in the Premier League to seven points but also intensified the rivalry between Hurzeler and Arteta.
