## Article

Casa Pia v Sporting got people talking, not just because of the result but also because of the referee’s controversial decisions, which left fans and analysts questioning the effectiveness of the officiating. Pedro Henriques, a former referee and now a pundit, analysed the decisions made during the match in detail, highlighting several incidents that could have changed the course of the game.

Just four minutes in, a foul by Lawrence Ofori on Pedro Lima went unnoticed by the referee. According to Henriques, “a direct free kick should have been awarded and a yellow card shown, for stopping a promising attack”. The analysis continues with an incident in the ninth minute, when David Sousa grabbed Pedro Lima, resulting in a justified yellow card, since there was a defender in a position to intervene.

Henriques also highlighted the referee’s handling of more controversial incidents, such as the moment when Khaly used his arm to stop Irankunda’s progress. According to the pundit, this incident deserved a yellow card and was correctly given. However, in the 45+2 minute, the referee’s consistency was questioned, as a pull by Pedro Lima on Khaly looked more obvious than other incidents that resulted in bookings.

The second half also had its moments of controversy. In the 60th minute, Silas Andersen was not cautioned after a foul deemed reckless, while the incident in the 70th minute between Khaly and Flávio Gonçalves, where the contact had no impact on the outcome of the play, raised questions about the application of UEFA’s rules. Henriques recalled that “technically, these situations should be punished with a penalty kick if they occur inside the area”.

Not only did the referee make questionable decisions, but his management of added time also seemed inadequate. Only two minutes were allowed at the end of the match, despite several stoppages and substitutions. Henriques stressed that “the mere two minutes of added time were completely out of step with the incidents of the second half”.

The impact of these decisions could be significant, not only for the teams’ morale but also for the battle in the table. Sporting, who are trying to establish themselves in the title race, and Casa Pia, who are looking to consolidate their position, may see these decisions as a turning point in their season. Henriques’ analysis prompts reflection on the need for better training and support for referees, ensuring that decisions like these are not repeated in the future.
