Mateus Fernandes prefers Manchester United to Tottenham; the deal depends on the amount.

Mateus Fernandes, a midfielder for West Ham, is at the center of one of the fiercest battles in this transfer market, with Manchester United and Tottenham fiercely contesting his signing. Despite the expressed interest from both Premier League giants, the young Brazilian has already made it clear what his preferred destination is — and it may surprise many fans. However, the deal is far from being finalized, and everything hinges on one essential condition: the astronomical fee demanded by West Ham.

At just 21 years old, Mateus Fernandes has stood out as one of the few positive points for West Ham in a season marked by relegation. Even in a struggling squad, the midfielder has demonstrated technical and physical qualities worthy of the best teams in the English championship, attracting the interest of several top clubs. Manchester United, currently in the process of rebuilding their midfield and looking to strengthen the department, seemed the most likely destination. However, Tottenham has made a strong push in the race, trying to surpass the Red Devils and secure the Brazilian’s arrival this summer.

In recent days, conflicting information has emerged regarding Mateus Fernandes’ preference. A recent report suggested that the player was leaning towards Tottenham. However, Andy Mitten, a well-known journalist in the Manchester United sphere, revealed on the “Talk of the Devils” podcast that Fernandes clearly prefers to move to Old Trafford. “Manchester United knows that the player wants to join the club,” Mitten stated, adding: “West Ham wants the largest financial return possible and is looking to create a bidding situation. Perhaps the agent wants this as well and is influencing the player. Jorge Mendes is the agent. I was told he would accept playing for Spurs, but he prefers Manchester United.” For Mitten, it all now depends on how much United is willing to pay: “It comes down to how much United wants to pay for the player. They do not want to get into a bidding situation.”

The context could not be more relevant for Fernandes’ future and for the Premier League itself. With a asking price of around £80 million, the midfielder’s transfer could not only change the balance of power in the league but also set a new inflation standard in the transfer market. Paul Ince, former England international and ex-Manchester United player, did not hide his astonishment at the amount demanded by West Ham. “It’s funny… I went from West Ham to Man United for £1 million! It’s pure madness when you look at today’s figures,” Ince said in statements to TEAMtalk. “When you spend that kind of money, £80 million, £110 million, you expect it to be for a forward who guarantees 30 goals a season. Mateus Fernandes at West Ham… they’re talking about £80 million for him. Before joining West Ham, he played for Southampton, who were relegated; now they have had consecutive relegations, so asking for that amount is insane.”

Ince went even further in analyzing the market and the profile of modern midfielders: “I know he is technically very good, but when you pay so much for a midfielder, I want to see a true all-rounder. I look at how I played, or Roy Keane, Patrick Vieira, Steven Gerrard – players who did it all, scored goals, recovered balls, created opportunities. True all-rounders. I don’t think many of these modern players are. So, seeing clubs spend this kind of money is pure madness. If we’re talking about 120 million for Elliot Anderson… for God’s sake, that’s a lot of money! It’s not the kid’s fault, but if Roy Keane is worth 300 million in today’s values, then if Anderson is worth 120 million, I should be worth at least 250 million,” he concluded with a laugh.

The saga is far from over and promises to liven up the upcoming weeks of the transfer market. Manchester United will have to decide whether to engage in a bidding war or maintain its stance of not inflating the already exorbitant prices in the English market. If they manage to secure Fernandes, they could take a decisive step in rebuilding their midfield, offering the coach a player with the potential to grow and establish himself among the European elite. Meanwhile, Tottenham, if they lose this target, will have to look for alternatives to strengthen the team and not fall behind in the race for the top spots in the Premier League.

It remains to be seen whether West Ham will achieve the deal they desire or if they will have to concede to the player’s wishes. The outcome of this transfer will undoubtedly be one of the hottest topics of the summer, potentially determining not only Matheus Fernandes’s future but also influencing the entire dynamics of the midfield market in the English league.
