Declan Rice’s injury worries England ahead of the World Cup.

Declan Rice left England in suspense when he was substituted in the 71st minute against Croatia, immediately raising the biggest alarm in the seemingly unstoppable march of the English team towards glory in the World Cup. Thomas Tuchel, visibly concerned, was quick to assure that the midfielder’s early exit was merely precautionary, but the fear of losing his key player in midfield at a crucial moment in the tournament quickly settled among fans and commentators.

The incident occurred during England’s opening match, held at the Olympic Stadium last Sunday, when Rice requested to be substituted due to persistent pains he has been managing since the second half of the season at Arsenal. “I would never normally take him off,” Tuchel admitted afterwards, clarifying that he was only protecting him and that the player himself reassured him: “In the end, he assured me that everything is fine.” Rice, speaking with reporters after the match, tried to downplay the situation: “I’m fine – better than ever. I’ve been dealing with some minor nerve pains here and there, but nothing alarming. It was just a precaution. I’ll be back for the Ghana game.” It is worth noting that Rice has been truly unstoppable for Arsenal this season, completing nearly every minute in the Premier League and Champions League, despite physical complaints.

This situation not only raises doubts about the strength of the English squad but also forces Tuchel to consider alternatives for the upcoming matches against Ghana and Panama, or, in the worst-case scenario, for any potential absences of Rice in the knockout games. The dependence on the midfielder, both for Arsenal and for the national team, is evident: neither Mikel Arteta nor Tuchel can do without him when the game is still in the balance. The risk of worsening the injury, should he be forced to play, is a real threat to the English dream.

In the press conference, Tuchel was emphatic about the importance of Rice but admitted to analyzing scenarios: “We have several options, but Declan is irreplaceable. However, the player’s health will always come first.” Among the names mentioned as possible substitutes, the debate is heated: Reece James, Jordan Henderson, Kobbie Mainoo, Jude Bellingham, Nico O’Reilly, John Stones, Eberechi Eze, Trevoh Chalobah, and even Harry Kane appear on the list, each with clear advantages and limitations.

At the bottom of the hierarchy, Harry Kane emerges, with the most fervent fans suggesting he should play as a midfielder, claiming that “he’s always wandering into the midfield.” However, the physical toll and the risk of being sent off make the idea almost comical, as Tuchel privately joked. Trevoh Chalobah, called up at the last minute, has intermittent experience in midfield, but his adaptation to this context would be a high-risk exercise. Eberechi Eze, whose defensive intensity leaves much to be desired, would be an extreme fallback solution, while John Stones, despite nearly perfect memories of Manchester City’s European nights, no longer shows the vigor of past times.

Further up, young Nico O’Reilly, seen by Guardiola as a “Swiss Army knife,” has impressed with his maturity, but his use in midfield would require sacrificing options on the flanks, adding another headache for Tuchel. Jude Bellingham, brilliant as a number 10 against Croatia, loses impact when he drops deeper, but could be an option against more accessible opponents like Ghana or Panama. Kobbie Mainoo, despite being highly regarded by Manchester United fans, faces skepticism regarding his effectiveness off the ball, according to Rice.

Jordan Henderson, experienced and reliable, is seen as a “safe harbor” for less demanding matches, but doubts about his physical capacity persist, especially after a lackluster season in England and Saudi Arabia. At the top of the preferences is Reece James, who has already convinced Tuchel with solid performances as a defensive midfielder at Chelsea. “He has the body to defend at the highest level and the tactical flexibility. He is a real alternative for the midfield,” Tuchel stated after the victory over Croatia, reinforcing that James can replicate many of Rice’s qualities.

With the next challenge against Ghana on the horizon, Tuchel faces a critical decision: risk Rice and jeopardize the rest of the tournament, or bet on one of the alternatives and preserve his midfield engine for the knockout games, where everything is decided. The performance of the substitutes in these upcoming matches will be scrutinized closely, with a direct impact on England’s title aspirations. If Rice fully recovers, England retains its status as favorites. Otherwise, the adaptability of the squad will be put to the test in one of the biggest challenges to Tuchel’s leadership as coach. The fate of the English midfield is uncertain, and the eyes of the world are on the German manager’s upcoming choices.
