“Jon Rahm loses his temper over insult after mistake at the U.S. Open.”

Jon Rahm was caught on camera exploding with anger after missing what seemed to be a routine putt at the U.S. Open, in a moment that has already gone viral and is lighting up social media. The Spanish golfer, known for his intensity on the course, could not contain his frustration and let out a loud “F—K IT!” immediately after the mistake, captured by a nearby microphone. This outburst has been widely shared and gone viral, reigniting the debate about raw emotions in high-level golf.

The incident occurred during the second round of the U.S. Open at the iconic Shinnecock Hills course, after Rahm had shone the previous day with an impeccable performance — a round without bogeys, a feat not seen at a U.S. Open at Shinnecock in 22 years. The Spaniard finished the first round with an impressive 68, placing himself in contention for the top spots and establishing himself as one of the favorites for victory. However, Friday brought him unexpected difficulties: his putter completely cooled off, and the pressure became evident. Midway through the course, after missing an apparently easy birdie putt, Rahm lost his composure and released all the accumulated tension, in a moment captured by cameras and immediately amplified on social media.

This incident is noteworthy not only for its visual and auditory impact but also for the competitive context in which it occurs. Rahm is one of the most charismatic and controversial figures in world golf, and every gesture he makes is scrutinized in detail. The U.S. Open is one of the most demanding tournaments on the calendar, with courses designed to push players to their physical and mental limits. Furthermore, Rahm arrives at Shinnecock with an impressive recent track record: two victories and four second places in the last eight events of LIV Golf, leading the league’s points standings. For a player of this caliber, a small mistake can turn into an emotional cataclysm — and that is exactly what fascinates and divides fans and critics.

Reactions came swiftly. Fans flooded social media with comments, both criticizing and defending Rahm. The incident recalls other tense moments involving the Spaniard. In 2022, at the Memorial Tournament, he threw a club that nearly hit a journalist. At the 2023 PGA Championship, he was filmed asking a cameraman to stop filming him: “Stop pointing that at my face when I’m upset,” Rahm demanded, visibly irritated. More recently, another club throw during the PGA Championship forced him to issue a formal apology and receive a warning under the new PGA Tour code of conduct. Rahm himself has publicly admitted to working on the mental aspect of his game, revealing that he has had discussions with caddie Adam Hayes, even on the practice green at Augusta, due to “a simple misunderstanding.”

This explosion is by no means a unique case in elite golf. Other prominent names, such as Wyndham Clark and Rory McIlroy, have had similar episodes. Clark was even banned from Oakmont after destroying lockers for failing to make the cut, and he has thrown a driver at sponsor signage, nearly hitting a volunteer. McIlroy has thrown a club into a lake and has needed a colleague to separate him from a heated argument with a caddie at the Ryder Cup. Even Tiger Woods, the greatest of all, is famous for both his incredible shots and his temperamental outbursts — he has been fined on the European Tour for spitting on the green and insulting camera operators. Golf, despite its image as a restrained sport, is far from immune to the brutal pressure of major stages.

Despite the media spectacle, Rahm’s gesture is unlikely to result in any sanction, as he did not violate any direct rules of the course nor harm others. The new PGA code of conduct only penalizes more serious behaviors, such as destruction of equipment or physical aggression. Thus, the incident is expected to quickly fade from memory, especially if Rahm can regain his focus and remain in contention for the title.

With the third round starting on Saturday morning, the Spaniard will have to put this moment of frustration behind him. The pressure is mounting, the spotlight is on Rahm, and the next 18 holes promise intense emotions. If he can turn his anger into motivation, he might still surprise everyone and contend for the trophy. But, for now, the world of golf continues to debate the limits of emotion on the most demanding greens on the planet.
