Rúben Dias downplays criticism of the national team and Cristiano at the World Cup.

Rúben Dias did not let himself be affected by the fierce criticism that has been directed at the National Team and at Cristiano Ronaldo following the disappointing draw against the DR Congo in the World Cup. The central defender got straight to the point and made it clear that this type of scrutiny no longer surprises anyone in the locker room, emphasizing that all players are under scrutiny and not just the Portuguese captain.

In anticipation of the upcoming match against Uzbekistan, scheduled for this Friday, Rúben Dias was asked about the pressure and negative comments that have emerged, particularly on social media, following the less successful performance against the African national team. The Portuguese international responded candidly: “The arrows are not aimed at just one player, Cris is a big focus, but we are all under scrutiny at a moment like this. I think nothing out of the ordinary is happening; it has always been this way since I’ve been here, it will continue to be, and as such, nothing new.” With these words, Dias made it clear that the atmosphere in the National Team is not affected by external criticism, even when it comes from historical figures in Portuguese football.

This unexpected draw in the World Cup has sparked a whirlwind of opinions and criticisms, some from former internationals, questioning the team’s ability to maintain focus and competitive intensity when faced with adversity. For Rúben Dias, this additional pressure is part of the game and does not affect the group’s confidence. “The World Cup is a showcase for both good and bad, and even former players have voiced criticisms… I haven’t seen much of what they said; I didn’t see much criticism when the results aren’t positive, which is natural for it to triple, but that doesn’t dent our confidence. The sooner difficulties come, the better; we need to have the ability to grow, I don’t expect perfect scenarios. The most important thing is to keep our feet on the ground,” explained the Manchester City central defender.

The importance of this reaction lies in the fact that Portugal is in a group where any slip can be fatal to their aspirations of advancing in the competition. The draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo may have left its marks, but Dias believes that the adversities will only strengthen the squad. The World Cup is undoubtedly a showcase of maximum demand where pressure grows exponentially with the slightest mistake. If the National Team can turn these criticisms into motivation, they could emerge stronger and more determined in the upcoming challenges.

Regarding how the group reacts to criticism, Rúben Dias was emphatic in stating that speculation is not a topic within the locker room. “Honestly, all the speculation… that is not a topic, we are all together around a dream, my mind doesn’t go there. It appears on social media, but we don’t pay attention to it and I don’t feel it’s a topic I need to address,” the player assured, dismissing the media weight in favor of the main focus: collective success.

Regarding what specifically went wrong against the DR Congo, the defender provided an honest and self-critical analysis. “Now there are so many analysts discussing the game and reaching conclusions about what went wrong, that in some publications people have already realized what didn’t go so well. We scored early and started the game well, and there was a sense of energy at that moment, but we ended up relaxing and losing discipline, which made us less efficient, and we couldn’t instill the fear we needed to. The game entered a strange dynamic. We ended up losing our discipline, and we are aware of that among ourselves. I only see positive things from here on out,” said Rúben Dias, expressing optimism about the immediate future of the team.

The upcoming challenge against Uzbekistan thus takes on decisive contours. The pressure is on, and the margin for error is minimal, but the National Team promises to take the field with a different attitude and greater tactical rigor. If Portugal can correct the mistakes of the recent past, it keeps its aspirations of reaching the round of 16 intact and can continue to dream big in this World Cup. The response to the criticism will be given on the pitch, where only victory matters.
