Roberto Martinez highlights Portugal’s attitude after the draw with Congo.

The Portuguese national team left fans stunned by conceding a draw to an unexpected Democratic Republic of the Congo, in a match where the Portuguese favoritism seemed unquestionable from the outset. The 1-1 draw, achieved in Houston, not only shook expectations regarding Portugal’s journey in the World Cup but also exposed weaknesses and a lack of focus in a squad filled with stars and title contenders. In a game that demanded total dominance and an unequivocal victory, the team with the quinas could only manage an early goal and watched, incredulously, as the Congolese celebrated passionately, as if they had won the trophy.

The match was marked by Portugal’s explosive start, with João Neves heading the ball into the net just six minutes in, fueling hopes of a rout. However, despite nearly 70% possession and star names like Cristiano Ronaldo on the field, the team led by Roberto Martínez proved unable to convert their dominance into clear opportunities, falling into a web of inconsequential passes and offensive hesitation. The Democratic Republic of Congo, returning to the World Cup after a 50-year absence, remained unflappable, resisting the pressure and taking advantage of a fatal lapse in the Portuguese defense to equalize in stoppage time of the first half, through Yoane Wissa.

This unexpected and disappointing result raises doubts and concerns about the true state of the national team. Portugal entered as one of the main favorites to win the trophy, but the inability to capitalize on the initial goal and the apathy displayed after the opponent’s equalizer leave questions open regarding preparation, mentality, and leadership in key moments. The draw allows the DRC to dream and forces Portugal into deep reflection, at the risk of jeopardizing their aspirations to advance to the round of 16.

At the press conference following the match, Roberto Martínez adopted a cautious yet demanding tone, refusing to dramatize excessively while acknowledging the need for immediate correction. “We need to improve. We must be very self-critical,” emphasized the coach, reinforcing: “Our responsibility here is to assess this game, be self-critical, and that is the main point… The World Cup is like this. We continue our work.” Martínez also highlighted the players’ attitude, stating: “I noticed that the players’ attitude was extraordinary above all, and I believe in what we can do.” Despite the setback, the Spanish coach sought to draw parallels with the journeys of past champions: “Teams like Spain and Argentina also had difficult starts in the World Cup before triumphing. The important thing is to reflect, learn, and move forward.”

The coach went further in analyzing the effect of the opening goal, considering it, paradoxically, detrimental to the team: “We scored at a moment when emotions usually help maintain momentum and try to score the second goal, but for us, it had the opposite effect. We tried to maintain possession, couldn’t reach the area, and gave Congo the opportunity to restructure and launch counterattacks.” Martínez also warned that the team must not get carried away by the advantage, losing aggression and focus: “We need to learn that our football and our responsibility is to reach the highest possible level.”

Regarding the opponent, Martínez did not hold back in praising the performance and game plan of the Congolese team: “They were intense, confident. They played as if it were a final in a major tournament, and that shows incredible personality. We knew that Congo could do this. It was not a surprise.”

With this result, Portugal is forced to win the next match against Uzbekistan, scheduled for Tuesday, to avoid jeopardizing their qualification in Group K. Another slip-up could mean a crisis scenario and maximum pressure on the locker room and the coach. The eyes of the country and Europe are now fixed on the response that Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates will be able to give in a competition where there is no room for repeated mistakes and where every lost point could cost the dream of lifting an international trophy again.
