The defending champion Alexander Bublik returns to the grass of the Halle Open 2026 with all eyes focused on his title defense, while heavyweights such as Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, and the unpredictable Nick Kyrgios promise to ignite the prestigious German tournament. Already, expectations are high: the 33rd edition of the ATP 500 in Halle is filled with stars, million-dollar prizes, and matchups that could reshape the landscape of world tennis in the grass season.

The tournament takes place from June 15 to 21 at the iconic OWL Arena in Halle, Germany, featuring a star-studded lineup. Alexander Zverev and Flavio Cobolli, who faced off in the last final of Roland Garros, have chosen not to participate in Stuttgart to focus their efforts on this start of the grass season, where both aim to capture their first title on this surface. Taylor Fritz, the winner in Stuttgart in 2025 and with five grass titles to his name, also enters the fray to defend the German crown. The lineup of seeded players is completed by Felix Auger-Aliassime, Ben Shelton, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Bublik, and Andrey Rublev. They are joined by wildcards Daniel Altmaier, Max Schonhaus, and Nick Kyrgios, the irreverent Australian who returns to the big stage after a long absence and a troubled comeback in Stuttgart.

The Halle Open is one of the most prestigious tournaments of the grass season, serving as a precursor to Wimbledon, and its significance is amplified by the high number of ATP points at stake — 500 for the champion, 330 for the runner-up, 200 for the semifinalists, and 100 for those reaching the quarter-finals. The prize money matches the high stakes: nearly 3 million dollars are on offer, with $558,877 reserved for the winner and $300,685 for the finalist. Roger Federer, the record holder with ten victories in Halle and the oldest winner (37 years in 2019), maintains the legendary status of the tournament, even in his absence from the courts.

The absence of Jannik Sinner, the 2024 champion, is one of the big stories of this edition. The Italian, who dominated the early Masters 1000 events of the year but fell early at Roland Garros, opted to manage his schedule and focus on defending his title at Wimbledon, after defeating Carlos Alcaraz at the All England Club last year. It is also worth noting that Alcaraz, who won the 2023 and 2024 editions by defeating the giant Novak Djokovic, will also be absent due to a wrist injury, leaving the field open for new surprises and potential changes at the top of the rankings.

Regarding expectations for the tournament, Alexander Zverev emphasized in his preview: “After winning my first Grand Slam in Paris, I want to show that I can also win on grass. The support at home is always special and Halle is perfect for preparing for Wimbledon.” For his part, Taylor Fritz stated before heading to Germany: “I love playing on this surface and I feel confident after good results in Stuttgart and Eastbourne. I am defending the title, but the level is extremely high.” As for Nick Kyrgios, who received a wildcard from the organizers, he did not hide his enthusiasm: “Being back and feeling the atmosphere of the big tournaments is all I want. I am motivated to surprise and show that I can still compete with the best.” Daniil Medvedev, the runner-up last year, added: “I have already proven that I can go far on grass, but I need to win here. This year I am coming in strong.”

The tournament calendar spans seven intense days: the first round begins on June 15, followed by the second round on June 16 and 17, quarter-finals on the 18th, semi-finals on the 19th, and the final scheduled for June 21. Portuguese fans will be able to follow all the action live through international channels: Tennis Channel in the USA, Sky Sports Tennis in the UK, TSN in Canada, and beIN Sports in Australia. In Portugal, it is expected that one of the cable sports channels will secure the broadcasting rights, given the magnitude of the event and the growing interest in national tennis.

With the start of Wimbledon scheduled for June 29, the Halle Open serves as a barometer to assess the favorites for London glory. The absence of Sinner and Alcaraz opens the door for surprises, while Bublik, Zverev, Medvedev, and Fritz emerge as the main contenders for the trophy. The impact on the ATP ranking could be significant, especially for those looking to secure a better position before the third Grand Slam of the season. For fans and critics, this is the ideal moment to analyze form, emerging rivalries, and potential outsiders eyeing the top of world tennis.
