Manchester United is preparing a masterstroke to secure Castello Lukeba and surpass the fierce competition from Barcelona in the race for the titan defender of RB Leipzig. The young Frenchman, who joined the Bundesliga from Olympique Lyonnais for around £34 million in 2023, has quickly become one of the defensive references in the German league – and is now at the center of a multimillion-dollar battle among European giants.
At just 23 years old, Lukeba is already considered one of the most complete defenders in European football. Although he was not called up by Didier Deschamps for the World Cup, the central defender has accumulated six caps for the French national team since his debut in 2024. Equipped with impressive speed, extraordinary physical strength, and remarkable jumping ability that compensates for his 1.83 meters, Lukeba stands out both in the central axis and on the left side of the defense, where his refined left foot makes him a constant threat in possession. His contract with RB Leipzig includes a release clause of around £70 million, but sources close to the German club admit that a bid in the region of £55 million could be enough to open negotiations.

THE 2026 WORLD CUP IS EXPERIENCED WITH LEGO
Manchester United, despite the recent renewal of Harry Maguire, remains determined to strengthen its defensive line, with Lukeba being the priority target identified by INEOS. The Frenchman’s versatility fits perfectly into the plans of the Red Devils, especially at a time when Patrick Dorgu has reinvented himself as a left winger under the guidance of Michael Carrick, leaving Luke Shaw as the only natural option for left-back. This gap makes Lukeba even more appealing to the structure at Old Trafford, which is believed to have already initiated concrete contacts with the player and his representative.
However, the interest from Manchester United is far from exclusive. Fussball Daten revealed that Barcelona has recently entered the race, having already established preliminary contacts to assess the feasibility of the transfer. The Catalans, who are going through a period of financial restrictions, are seeking “smart” strategies to secure the French player without compromising the budget allocated to strengthening the attack under the guidance of Hansi Flick. Chelsea and Tottenham are also keeping an eye on the situation: the Londoners have been tracking Lukeba for two years, while Spurs are looking for alternatives amid the potential departure of Micky van de Ven.
Pressure is mounting, and the information coming from the Red Bull Arena is contradictory. On one hand, there are reports that the Leipzig management has reached an “internal agreement” to sell Lukeba below the release clause this summer, in order to capitalize on the growing interest and finance new signings. On the other hand, there are still voices advocating for a relentless stance in negotiations, demanding figures close to £70 million to release one of their biggest prospects.
The Manchester United, according to Fussball Daten, remains “in the lead” and heads the list of suitors. However, if Leipzig insists on a price close to the release clause for a player whose initial role will be to provide depth to the squad, the Old Trafford club may quickly retreat and turn to other targets. The final decision will depend on United’s negotiating ability and Lukeba’s willingness to embrace the challenge of the Premier League, knowing that competition from Barcelona could inflate the deal at any moment.
The coming days promise to be decisive. If Manchester United can finalize the transfer for a value closer to £55 million, Lukeba could arrive at Old Trafford this summer, bringing with him the versatility and quality that have been lacking in the Red Devils’ defense. On the other hand, if Barcelona can make a convincing offer, the Frenchman’s destination may change course, putting even more pressure on Ten Hag’s team, which cannot afford to miss out on structural reinforcements in this transfer window. The outcome of this saga could redefine the defensive ambitions of the biggest clubs in Europe for the upcoming season.
