Marta Kostyuk saw her dream of winning the title at Roland Garros come to an end against young Russian prospect Mirra Andreeva, who eliminated her with a decisive 6-1, 6-3 in the tournament’s semi-finals. The Ukrainian, who reached this stage of a Grand Slam for the first time, thus saw an impressive streak of 17 consecutive victories on clay come to an end — a run that catapulted her into the spotlight of world tennis and which she herself described as unforgettable.
“Without a doubt, my winning streak. I’ll take it with me to the grave,” Marta Kostyuk confessed to the press, visibly proud of her journey. “I am very satisfied with my clay season. Just one loss. If someone had told me this a few months ago, I wouldn’t have believed it. I am really very happy.”
Kostyuk’s invincibility began in April, with her victory over Magda Linette in the Davis Cup, and extended onto the WTA circuit, where the Ukrainian dominated in overwhelming fashion. In Rouen, as the number one seed, she claimed the title with victories over names like Diane Parry, Caty McNally, Ann Li, and Veronika Podrez. The streak continued in Madrid, where she secured her first WTA 1000 title with wins over Jessica Pegula, Linda Noskova, and Anastasia Potapova, culminating in a direct victory over Andreeva.
Opting to skip the Masters in Rome, Kostyuk arrived at Roland Garros in excellent form, consistently eliminating Oksana Selekhmeteva, Katie Volynets, and Viktorija Golubic without losing a single set. The real test came in her match against four-time tournament champion Iga Swiatek. After three previous losses without winning a set, the Ukrainian delivered a stunning performance, winning 7-5, 6-1, confirming her significant competitive growth. The 17th consecutive victory was achieved against compatriot and favorite Elina Svitolina in an intense three-set duel (6-3, 2-6, 6-2).
However, the anticipated final against Andreeva proved to be an insurmountable obstacle for Kostyuk. The young Russian dominated from the start, taking advantage of the adverse wind conditions that disrupted the rhythm of the Ukrainian, who made 17 unforced errors just in the first set, particularly with her forehand. Although the rain forced the roof to close and calmed the atmosphere, giving some hope to Kostyuk, who managed to reduce the deficit to 3-4, Andreeva remained composed and finished the match with authority.
Despite the setback, Marta Kostyuk leaves Roland Garros with her head held high and renewed confidence for the next phase of the season, which will take her to the grass courts. Her historic performance allowed her to climb to 12th place in the WTA rankings, the best position of her career, and the young Ukrainian is determined to break into the Top 10 in the coming months.
This dream journey on clay will forever be etched in Marta Kostyuk’s memory, who promised to carry this experience “to the grave,” a statement that reveals the emotional intensity and pride in her progress in the world of tennis. Now, the fight continues, and the world will be watching the next chapter of her career.
