“Rafael Jodar and his unique philosophy at the French Open”

Rafael Jodar is revolutionizing tennis at the 2026 French Open, not only for his talent on the court but also for the unprecedented philosophy he imposes on his coaching team — or rather, the absence of one. The young Spaniard has attracted all eyes by keeping just one person in his designated area for the team: his father, Rafael Jodar, a decision that has surprised fans and experts alike.

In a tournament where team benches are usually packed with coaches, physiotherapists, and analysts, Jodar’s space, which can accommodate up to 18 people, is exclusively occupied by his father. This uniqueness reached a peak of controversy when four confused fans sat in that area, forcing the player to interrupt the match to demand their immediate removal. The message was clear: his team consists of just him and his father.

“Players have the right to decide who sits in our box, and in my case, that person is just my father. My team is me and my father,” stated Rafael Jodar, reinforcing a perspective that challenges the norms of professional tennis.

This close relationship is not a coincidence. Jodar’s father, who holds a degree in Physical Activity Sciences from INEF Madrid, has extensive experience as a basketball coach and physical education teacher, and was also a successful player, with titles including a league championship, two Copa de la Reina titles, and a EuroLeague final while playing for Rivas Ecópolis. All this background has been fundamental in shaping his son’s career, who is taking an unconventional path in managing his coaching staff.

But the controversy does not end there. During the third round of the French Open, Jodar found himself embroiled in a serious accusation after a viral video appeared to show him pushing a young girl during a break. The tennis player was quick to respond, vehemently denying any intention to harm the girl and explaining that it was all a misunderstanding.

“No, no, no. I would never do that. I didn’t push her or anything like that. I was asking my dad to pass me some things after the break to go to the bathroom, and she was in the way. I think she tried to move out of the way, she was stepping back, but she fell without me touching her,” Jodar clarified, also emphasizing his respect and appreciation for the work of the young people in the organization.

The Spaniard will now face Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals, in a match that promises to be intense and where his unique philosophy may be tested to the fullest. His performance at the French Open is marking a new era in tennis, showing that mental strength and family cohesion can be as decisive as any large team.

Rafael Jodar is not just a rising talent; he is an example that, in sports, quality is worth more than quantity, and that simplicity can be a powerful weapon to conquer the biggest stages in the world.
